Get on With It
Linda Ronstadt Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What will they say those in your house
When they see me drinking,
Will they think that it's on account of you
That I live my life drinking
Get on with it.

But if you could see
How pretty these binges are
Get on with it.

But until whenever
Your parents stop protecting you
Get on with it.

Each time that I come to see you
I'm always slipping;
Is it that I have bad luck
Or is it that it's drizzling on me,
Get on with it.
But if you could see
Me dry my chaco in my flowering fig tree grove
Get on with it.

But if ever
I dry my chaco in my flowering fig tree grove,
Get on with it.

You say that I'm a fool,
Because i'm always getting drunk,
And in spite of your scorn,
I want to keep on drinking,
Get on with it.

But if you were to see
How pretty these binges are,
Get on with it.

But how beautiful

Are the hours I spend emptying bottles,
Get on with it

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Linda Ronstadt's song "Get on With It" seem to be about the singer's relationship with someone who disapproves of their drinking habit. The singer seems to be aware of how they are perceived by this person's family ("what will they say those in your house / when they see me drinking") and seems resigned to the fact that they are seen as a negative influence on this person's life. However, the singer also seems to take pleasure in their drinking -- they describe the "pretty" and "beautiful" aspects of their "binges" and the "hours [they] spend emptying bottles." The chorus "get on with it" seems to be a kind of defiant statement, telling this disapproving person to accept the singer as they are and move on.

The singer also seems to feel unlucky or perhaps even cursed -- they describe always "slipping" or having bad luck when they come to see this person. It's not clear whether this bad luck is literal or metaphoric, but either way it seems to add to the singer's sense of being doomed to a life of disapproval and misfortune. The line "each time that I come to see you / I'm always slipping" could also be interpreted as referring to the singer's drinking habit -- that they always end up drinking when they come to visit this person, even if it wasn't their intention.

Overall, the lyrics of "Get on With It" seem to be a kind of defense of the singer's drinking habit, or at least an acceptance of it as a part of who they are. The singer isn't trying to justify their behavior to anyone else -- they seem resigned to the fact that they will never be accepted by this person's family or perhaps by society more broadly. Instead, the singer is insisting that this disapproving person "get on with it" and accept them as they are, flaws and all.

What will they say those in your house
What will the people in your home think when they see me drinking?

When they see me drinking,
When they witness me consuming alcohol,

Will they think that it's on account of you
Will they believe that your influence is why I choose to drink?

That I live my life drinking
That my existence is sustained by consuming alcohol,

Get on with it.
Just proceed without concern.

But if you could see
If only you could observe

How pretty these binges are
How pleasant these occasions of overindulgence are,

But until whenever
But until such a time comes when

Your parents stop protecting you
Your parents cease shielding you,

Each time that I come to see you
Whenever I visit you,

I'm always slipping;
I'm invariably experiencing some cropper;

Is it that I have bad luck
Is it an incidence of poor fortune,

Or is it that it's drizzling on me,
Or is it just that it's raining on me,

Get on with it.
Just keep going without concern.

But if you could see
If only you could observe

Me dry my chaco in my flowering fig tree grove
How I take care of my sandal in my blooming fig tree orchard,

But if ever
But if at some point,

I dry my chaco in my flowering fig tree grove,
I take care of my sandal in my blooming fig tree orchard,

Get on with it.
Just proceed without concern.

You say that I'm a fool,
You declare that I am a foolish person,

Because i'm always getting drunk,
Because I'm consistently consuming alcohol,

And in spite of your scorn,
Despite your contempt,

I want to keep on drinking,
I have a desire to continue consuming alcohol,

Get on with it.
Just keep going without concern.

But if you were to see
But if you were to observe

How pretty these binges are,
How delightful these occasions of overindulgence are,

Get on with it.
Just proceed without concern.

But how beautiful
But how lovely

Are the hours I spend emptying bottles,
Are the hours I take to drain my bottles,

Get on with it
Just keep going without concern.
