Heart Is Like a Wheel
Linda Ronstadt Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Some say the heart is just like a wheel
When you bend it you can't mend it
But my love for you is like a sinking ship
And my heart is on that ship out in mid-ocean

When harm is done no love can be won
I know it happens frequently
What I can't understand oh please God hold my hand
Why it had to happen to me

And it's only love and it's only love
That can wreck a human being and turn him inside out

Some say the heart is just like a wheel
When you bend it you can't mend it

But my love for you is like a sinking ship
And my heart is on that ship out in mid-ocean

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Linda Ronstadt's "Heart Is Like a Wheel" are a heart-wrenching exploration of the pain and confusion of a failed love. The first two lines introduce the idea that the heart is a fragile and easily broken thing, and once it's been broken, it can never be fully repaired. However, Ronstadt's love for her lost partner is like a ship that's sinking out in the middle of the ocean: there's nothing she can do to save it, but she's tied to it nonetheless.

The second verse delves deeper into Ronstadt's emotional turmoil. She recognizes that when hurt is inflicted in a relationship, it's almost impossible to continue loving the person who hurt you. Despite this understanding, she's still left grappling with the "why" of it all. Ronstadt's invocation of God suggests that she's seeking some kind of divine understanding or comfort for her pain.

The chorus returns to the theme of love as a destructive force. In this context, it's not just the heart that's fragile but the human being as a whole. Love can completely upend a person and leave them feeling helpless and adrift, much like Ronstadt's sinking ship.

Simply heartbreaking. One of the purest female vocalists to ever have performed and recorded.

Everyone either wanted to play on her albums or they wanted her to sing their songs. She launched the careers of many musicians. Best female vocalist of all time.

Linda’s voice plus the McGarrigles’ words and music equals heaven.

I first heard this song, and the album that it came from in 1976. I am 50 now and the magic of Linda's voice has never waned. We will always love you, Linda.

I can relate. Like you, I continue to admire "the magic" of Ms. Ronstadt's voice. A few months before listening to her in this song and upon a very favorable review in 'High Fidelity' magazine, I had bought the McGarrigle sisters' album and continue to love unconditionally their inimitable harmonies. I find no conflict in my admiration of both renditions. Insofar as I know, Linda has at no time claimed to "own it."

April England; what a great movie-star name! Yeah, I first got hooked on Linda in 1974 when this came out; I am 60 now and the magic has just increased! Still in love with Linda
