Heart Like A Wheel
Linda Ronstadt Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Some say the heart is just like a wheel
When you bend it, you can't mend it
But my love for you is like a sinking ship
And my heart is on that ship out in mid-ocean

When harm is done no love can be won
I know it happens frequently
What I can't understand oh please God hold my hand
Why it had to happen to me

And it's only love and it's only love
That can wreck a human being and turn him inside out

Some say the heart is just like a wheel
When you bend it you can't mend it

But my love for you is like a sinking ship
And my heart is on that ship out in mid-ocean

Overall Meaning

In Linda Ronstadt's song Heart Like a Wheel, she uses the metaphor of a wheel to depict the fragile nature of the heart. According to some, just like a wheel, once the heart is broken or bent, it cannot be fixed. Ronstadt portrays her own heart as a sinking ship, lost in the vast and unpredictable waters of the ocean. She acknowledges the inevitability of harm caused in relationships, with the understanding that no love can be won once damage is inflicted. Despite the inevitable hurt, Ronstadt laments on the effects of love on the human psyche. Only love has the power to completely destroy a person and turn them inside out.

The chorus repeats the metaphor repeated in the opening verse but Ronstadt's delivery suggests that her heart can never be mended since it's on a sinking ship, presumably not making it to its destination. However, it's evident that Ronstadt recognizes love as the ultimate human experience despite its drawbacks. She's confused to why she became the victim of the pain created by love, which she alludes to in "Why it had to happen to me".

Everyone either wanted to play on her albums or they wanted her to sing their songs. She launched the careers of many musicians. Best female vocalist of all time.

Linda’s voice plus the McGarrigles’ words and music equals heaven.

I first heard this song, and the album that it came from in 1976. I am 50 now and the magic of Linda's voice has never waned. We will always love you, Linda.

I can relate. Like you, I continue to admire "the magic" of Ms. Ronstadt's voice. A few months before listening to her in this song and upon a very favorable review in 'High Fidelity' magazine, I had bought the McGarrigle sisters' album and continue to love unconditionally their inimitable harmonies. I find no conflict in my admiration of both renditions. Insofar as I know, Linda has at no time claimed to "own it."

April England; what a great movie-star name! Yeah, I first got hooked on Linda in 1974 when this came out; I am 60 now and the magic has just increased! Still in love with Linda
