Save me
Free me
From my heart this time
Well the train's gone
Down the track and I'm
I'm left behind

But nothing can save me from this ball and chain
I've made up my mind I would leave today
But you're keeping me going I know it's insane
'Cause I'll love you and lose again

Well the heart calls
And the mind obeys
Oh it knows better than me baby
And if I hold on for one more day
Oh maybe maybe he'll be true

But nothing can save me from this ball and chain
I've made up my mind I would leave today
But you're keeping me going I know it's insane
'Cause I'll love you and lose again

Nothing can save me from this ball and chain
I've made up my mind I would leave today
But you're keeping me going I know it's insane

'Cause I'll love you and lose again
Woah I'll love you and lose again

Overall Meaning

Linda Ronstadt's song "Lose Again" is a heart-wrenching ballad about the torment of unrequited love. The song is written by Karla Bonoff, who also sang backup vocals on the track. This song is a perfect vehicle for Ronstadt's emotive vocal delivery. The first verse succinctly sets up the situation - the train of love has left, but the singer is left behind. She pleads to be freed from her broken heart. In the second verse, the singer reveals that although she knows in her mind that she should move on from this doomed relationship, her heart is unable to let go. She holds on to the hope that maybe tomorrow her love will be reciprocated. The chorus encapsulates the emotional conflict of the singer's despair that nothing can save her from the painful cycle of her unrequited love, and also her unwavering commitment to this relationship, which she knows will inevitably lead to her being hurt once again.

The song's lyrics theme of being trapped, the sense of powerless, and a woman's futile struggle to be free from tyrannical love, is painfully relatable to many of us. Ronstadt's haunting voice adds to the song's tragic depth and emphasizes the emotions described in the lyrics. The song also has an understated musical arrangement, leaving plenty of space for Ronstadt's vocals to shine through.

You either got it or you don't. And good lord she had it. No one sings so purely and authentically now - truth is very few sang so openly back then. A visually and vocally stunning creature.

Linda singing a Karla Bonoff song--it does NOT get better than this. I first fell in love with this beautiful voice on "Different Drum" and then on "Long Long Time." Then I saw her singing on television; those eyes mesmerize you as you feel every ounce of passion in the songs. Wow--still, after all these years. Thanks for a lifetime of listening Linda--the voice of my generation IMHO.

@dog1net

There are female vocalists. And then there is Linda Ronstadt. End of story. . .

@mhintrepid

Linda Ronstadt. The greatest, most soul piercing singer of my generation. I saw her at a concert at Capital Center Maryland 1977. One of the most incredible performances I ever witnessed. Pure mastery of lyrics, melody, the whole package. She will always live in my memory. She was and is "The Voice".
