Mad Love
Linda Ronstadt Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If I can't get away from you
What am I gonna do
Cause you hit me just like a dream
Where there's no in-between
Cause I just fall forever
Fall forever in your eyes

Cause it's a mad mad love
Mad mad love
Mad mad love
Can't help falling now
Falling into mad love

Well you're shorting out all my pride
Like fireworks exploding inside
You're just something I can't deny
Why tell me baby why
Cause I just fall forever
Fall forever in your eyes

Cause it's a mad mad love
Mad mad love
Mad mad love
Can't help falling now
Falling into mad love

If I can't get away from you
What am I gonna do
Now you call me up and you're so cool
What d'ya what do you want me to do

Cause it's a mad mad love
Mad mad love
Mad mad love
I can't help it
Mad mad love
Mad mad love
Mad mad love

Can't help falling now
Falling into mad love

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Linda Ronstadt's song "Mad Love" express the feeling of being deeply in love with someone, to the point where it almost feels uncontrollable. The opening lines, "If I can't get away from you, what am I gonna do," suggest a sense of desperation, as if the singer is struggling to maintain some sense of control over their feelings. The use of the word "forever" in the phrase "fall forever in your eyes" underscores the idea that this love is all-consuming and has a timeless quality to it.

Throughout the song, Ronstadt employs metaphorical language to describe the intense emotional experience of falling in love. For instance, the line "You're just something I can't deny" seems to liken the attraction to a force of nature or a physical impulse that can't be resisted. Similarly, the image of "fireworks exploding inside" conjures up feelings of excitement and intensity.

Ultimately, the repeated refrain of "mad mad love" drives home the message that this is a love that defies reason or logic. Despite any doubts or concerns, the singer is falling headlong into this intense romantic connection and can't help themselves. The song captures the heady rush of new love and the way it can feel all-encompassing and overwhelming.

This is just a fabulous album from one of the most versatile female singers... it was a staple on my stereo when I was in the Army stationed in Hawaii and provided a perfect sountrack... Linda constantly reinvented herself and could sing anything...

Today, on Linda’s birthday all I have to say is that despite many critics panning of this album, it’s one of my favorites, and that shag haircut is her very best look. I’ve tried to resist but can’t help falling now, falling into mad love.

@Clayton Magee Nobody should ever listen to the idiots at Rolling Stone. Is that trash still being printed? This was a great album.

My fave album from 1980 !! Still listen to quite often!

Sometimes people assume that because the Rolling Stone panned the album that that was the general consensus. It was not. The album received mostly positive reviews, and even a few raves. Robert Hilburn, of the LA Times spoke of how Ronstadt was singing with more bite and freedom. Dennis Hunt, also of the Times placed it on his 10 best of the year list. The magazine Crawdaddy gave it an outright rave. Some "purists" didn't like it, but let's face it; there is a place in music for singers who can stay on key and make all the notes.

Mad Love! Platinum Album at the time, today it is sometimes overlooked in Ronstadt's canon 'cause she soon took that glorious voice elsewhere beyond rock. But it is a harder rockin' Ronstadt, her vocals are just soaring and the tunes are great fun. Wish they would remaster it - and maybe make the kids learn how to walk on stage, grab the mike, let the band rip and simply sing your heart out. Linda is our crush of a lifetime.
