Stoney End
Linda Ronstadt Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I was born from love
And my poor mother worked the mines
I was raised on the Good Book Jesus
Till I read between the lines
Now I don't believe
I want to see the morning
Going down the Stoney End
I never wanted to go
Down the Stoney End
Mama let me start all over
Cradle me, Mama, cradle me again
I can still remember him
With love light in his eyes
But the light flickered out and parted
As the sun began to rise
Now I don't believe
I want to see the morning
Going down the Stoney End
I never wanted to go
Down the Stoney End
Mama let me start all over
Cradle me, mama, cradle me again
(Cradle me, mama, cradle me again
Mama, cradle me again...)
Never mind the forecast
'Cause the sky has lost control
'Cause the furry and the broken thunders
Come to match my raging soul
Now I don't believe
I want to see the morning
Going down the Stoney End
I never wanted to go
Down the Stoney End
Mama let me start all over

Cradle me, mama, cradle me again
Going down the Stoney End...

Overall Meaning

The lyrics in Linda Ronstadt's "Stoney End" tell a story of a person's struggle with their faith and the desire to start anew. The first two lines reveal that the person was born out of love, but their mother worked in mines, indicating a hard and challenging upbringing. The next line reveals that the person was raised with a firm belief in Jesus, but over time began to question that belief and "read between the lines" of what they had been taught. They express a desire to see the natural beauty of the morning rather than believe in a higher power.

The lyrics continue with a reference to a past love, whose light flickered out as the sun rose. The person yearns for the comfort of being cradled by their mother and starting over. The lyric "Never mind the forecast, 'cause the sky has lost control" suggests a sense of chaos and losing faith in what was once believed to be a higher power. The person's soul matches the "furry and broken thunders," representing a tumultuous and emotional state of being.

Overall, "Stoney End" is a powerful and emotional song that explores themes of faith, love, and starting anew.

I was born from love
And my poor mother worked the mines
I was raised on the Good Book Jesus
Till I read between the lines
Now I don't believe
I wanna to see the morning
Going down the stoney end
I never wanted to go
Down the stoney end
Mama, let me start all over
Cradle me, Mama, cradle me again
And I can still remember him
With love light in his eyes
But the light flickered out and parted
As the sun began to rise
Now I don't believe
I want to see the morning
Going down the stoney end
That I never wanted to go
Down the stoney end
Mama, let me start all over
Cradle me, Mama, cradle me again
(Cradle me, Mama, cradle me again
Mama, cradle me again)
Never mind the forecast
'Cause the sky has lost control
'Cause the furry and the broken thunders
Come to match my raging soul
Now I don't believe
I wanna to see the morning
Going down the stoney end
I never wanted to go
Down the stoney and
Mama, let me start all over
Cradle me, Mama, cradle me again
(Going down the stoney end
I never wanted to go
I never wanted to go)
I never wanted to go
Mama
I never wanted to go
(Going down the stoney end
I never wanted to go
I never wanted to go)

I pray Jesus forgives her the first verse, and Linda for singing it.

@kensipes3448

@@deadandburied7626This is from my wife — who I agree with: The line is not a knock against Jesus, it’s against people’s interpretation of the Bible.
The song is widely believed to be about a young woman who got in trouble — possibly an unplanned pregnancy — for which she is shunned and destined to a “stony end” (a metaphor for the way “sinners” were stoned back in biblical times). We say this as Believers/Christians, ourselves. We don’t take the song personally and appreciate its artistic intent.

@eser8167

@@kensipes3448 Yeah, Jesus hasn't exactly been known to condone stoning or the judging of others based on their mistakes.

@kensipes3448

@@eser8167 Yes. If only might-makes-right “Christians” got that!

@eser8167

@@kensipes3448 Yep. He spent half his ministry critiscising the pharisees for being proud and feeling superiour because they followed a simple rulebook and went to church regularly. Kinda weird how this ended up coming full circle instead of the belief in humility and redemption. But I guess people are people and the easier route wins out for most over time. Can't blame them, some of the ideals set are impossible to live up to, but it wouldn't hurt if everyone recognised how far they still have to go and didn't become content.
