I've Got a Crush On You
Linda Ronstadt And The Nelson Riddle Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

How glad the many millions
Of Timothy's and William's
Would be, to capture me
But you had such persistence
You wore down my resistance
I fell, and it was swell
You're my big and brave and handsome Romeo
How I won you I shall never, never know
It's not that you're attractive
But oh, my heart grew active
When you came into view

I've got a crush on you, sweetie pie
All the day and nighttime, hear me sigh
I never had the least notion
That I could fall with such emotion
Could you coo, could you care
For a cunning cottage we could share
The world will pardon my mush
'Cause I've got a crush, my baby, on you

Could you coo, could you care
For a cunning cottage we could share

The world will pardon my mush
'Cause I've got a crush, my baby, on you

Overall Meaning

The song "I've Got A Crush On You" by Linda Ronstadt and The Nelson Riddle Orchestra is a classic love song that speaks about falling head over heels for someone who may not be conventionally attractive but has captured the singer's heart nonetheless. The lyrics express how glad the many millions of other suitors would be to capture the singer's affections, but it was the persistence of the person in question that ultimately won her over. The singer describes her love interest as her "big and brave and handsome Romeo," despite not understanding how she won him over. She also muses how her heart grew active upon seeing him, indicating that this person awakened a deep and powerful emotion within her.

As the song progresses, the singer openly declares her crush on her lover, calling him "sweetie pie" and sighing over him both day and night. She admits that she never thought she would fall for someone like him, but she has been truly swept off her feet. The song ends with the singer asking if her lover could "coo" and "care" for a "cunning cottage" that they could share together, clearly dreaming of a romantic future with this person. Although the world may judge her for her love-struck emotions, the singer declares that she cannot help having a crush on the person who has captured her heart.

So underrated. Crystal clear vocals, pitch perfect, emotion in spades, range, and could sell any song she sang. Her NRO work is legendary. You won't find 99.9% of singers EVER, that can even attempt it. She's a singers singer.

How I remember this concert. A memory almost made palpable by this video. Formal attire required. The anticipation, walking to the Arlington, it's hypodermic needle spire lit against the night sky. The interior designed as a faux Spanish village - the seating area beneath a ceiling dotted by tiny lights that mimicked a starry night - a legendary orchestra playing behind a legendary singer singing legendary songs. Memorable!

She was the gal of our dreams. Rock, Riddle, Rancheras whatever musical playground she chose to visit she triumphed. If you don't listen to the full Linda spectrum from Stone Ponies to her final, Adieu, you are simply not that cool afterall.

I have high regard for both artists.  Ronstadts instincts were duly served when she approached Riddle for her 'standards' project, as were Riddles, when he insisted on a full album.  The resulting 3 album deal exceeded everyone's wildest dreams: 2 Grammys for Riddle, 7 million units sold. Better yet, exposure of the American Songbook to legions of young fans, paving the way for other pop artists to record standards. Some even build careers on thath way: Buble and Connick come to mind.

I think she should have gotten at least one Grammy for that project. It was just that good.
