El Pescador
Linda Vera Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Linda Vera's song El Pescador depict the daily life of a fisherman who relies on nature and his skills to provide for his loved ones. In the opening stanza, we find the fisherman venturing out towards the sea with his tools of the trade, chincorro – a type of fishing net – and atarraya – a circular net – in his canoe made of arenca – a durable species of palm tree. He heads towards the shore with determination, where he hopes his catch will be plentiful. The moon, described as smiling and magical, highlights the peaceful and beautiful night scene as he fishes.

The chorus of the song emphasizes the close relationship between the fisherman and his surroundings. He speaks to the beach, the moon, and his fishing tools, highlighting that he is at the mercy of nature and his own resources. Though he may not be wealthy, he has what he needs to sustain his life and his livelihood.

In the final stanza, the fisherman heads back to the dock to sell his catch, where his sweetheart awaits him. The narrative comes full circle as the moon smiles on him once again, welcoming him back home to safety. The lyrics show that despite the hardships of a fisherman's life, there is also joy to be found in the simplicity of such a life, and the bounty that nature can provide.
