In the End

It starts with one thing
I don't know why
It doesn't even matter how hard you try
Keep that in mind
I designed this rhyme
To explain in due time
All I know
Time is a valuable thing
Watch it fly by as the pendulum swings
Watch it count down to the end of the day
The clock ticks life away

It's so unreal
Didn't look out below
Watch the time go right out the window
Trying to hold on, didn't even know
I wasted it all just to watch you go
I kept everything inside
And even though I tried, it all fell apart
What it meant to me
Will eventually be a memory of a time when

I tried so hard
And got so far
But in the end
It doesn't even matter
I had to fall
To lose it all
But in the end
It doesn't even matter

One thing, I don't know why
It doesn't even matter how hard you try
Keep that in mind
I designed this rhyme
To remind myself how
I tried so hard
In spite of the way you were mocking me
Acting like I was part of your property
Remembering all the times you fought with me
I'm surprised it got so far
Things aren't the way they were before
You wouldn't even recognize me anymore
Not that you knew me back then
But it all comes back to me in the end
You kept everything inside
And even though I tried, it all fell apart
What it meant to me will eventually be a memory of a time when

I tried so hard
And got so far
But in the end
It doesn't even matter
I had to fall
To lose it all
But in the end
It doesn't even matter

I've put my trust in you
Pushed as far as I can go
For all this
There's only one thing you should know
I've put my trust in you
Pushed as far as I can go
For all this
There's only one thing you should know

I tried so hard
And got so far
But in the end
It doesn't even matter
I had to fall
To lose it all

But in the end
It doesn't even matter

Overall Meaning

The song "In The End" by Linkin Park is about the frustration of trying so hard to make something work, only to have it all fall apart in the end. It starts with the singer acknowledging that he doesn't know why everything is falling apart, despite how hard he's been trying. He designed the rhymes in the song to explain how he's feeling and share his perspective on time, which is valuable and seems to be slipping away as life passes by. The clock ticking away seems to be a reminder of how precious time is, but also how quickly it can be wasted or lost.

The singer talks about trying to hold on but not realizing he was wasting his time, only to watch everything slip away without being able to stop it. He tried to keep everything inside, but eventually, it all fell apart. Despite his best efforts, the frustration and disappointment are palpable, culminating in the chorus where he acknowledges that all his efforts didn't matter in the end. He had to fall and lose it all to understand the futility of trying so hard.

The bridge speaks of a toxic relationship where the singer was being treated like someone's property and remembers all the times he fought with this person. He's surprised it got so bad, and now things aren't the way they were before. Interestingly, the person who he was fighting with might not even recognize him anymore. But, in the end, the singer also takes responsibility for keeping everything inside and not being able to save things. The song ends with a repetition of the chorus, emphasizing the point that no matter how hard he tries, it doesn't matter anymore.
