Linkin Park Lyrics

Yo, yo, forfeit the game, before somebody takes you out of the frame
Put your name to shame, cover up your face
You can't run the race, the pace is too fast, you just won't last
Won't last, won't last, won't last, won't last, won't last, won't last
Won't last, won't last, won't last, won't last, won't last, won't last

You love the way, I look at you
While taking pleasure in the awful things you put me through
You take away if I give in
My life, my pride is broken

You like to think you're never wrong
(You like to think you're never wrong)
You have to act like you're someone
(You have to act like you're someone)
You want someone to hurt like you
(You want someone to hurt like you)
You want to share what you've been through
(You live what you've learned)

You love the things, I say I do
The way I hurt myself again, just to get back at you
You take away, when I give in
My life, my pride is broken

You like to think you're never wrong
(You like to think you're never wrong)
You have to act like you're someone
(You have to act like you're someone)
You want someone to hurt like you
(You want someone to hurt like you)
You wanna' share what you've been through
(You live what you've learned)

Yo, yo, forfeit the game, before somebody takes you out of the frame
Put your name to shame, cover up your face
You can't run the race, the pace is too fast, you just won't last
Forfeit the game, before somebody takes you out of the frame
Put your name to shame, cover up your face
You can't run the race, the pace is too fast, you just won't last
Won't last, won't last, won't last, won't last, won't last, won't last

You like to think you're never wrong
You have to act like you're someone
(You have to act like you're someone)
You want someone to hurt like you
(You want someone to hurt like you)
You want to share what you've been through

You like to think you're never wrong
(You like to think you're never wrong)
You have to act like you're someone
(You have to act like you're someone)
You want someone to hurt like you
(You want someone to hurt like you)
You want to share what you've been through
(You live what you've learned)

(Oh, oh)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Pts.OF.Athrty are laden with dark and powerful emotions that speak to the experience of an individual who feels trapped and exploited by a toxic relationship. The main message behind the lyrics is that the most practical thing to do when you find yourself in such a situation is to quit the game and let go of the relationship. The game here is a metaphor for a toxic relationship that brings nothing but pain, misery, and disillusionment. It's just not worth it, and if you don't forfeit the game, you'll pay the ultimate price in the end. The singer highlights how the pace of the game is too fast and how you just won't last, and so it's better to quit while you're still alive.

The singer emphasizes how the other character enjoys seeing them hurt and how they take pleasure in causing him pain. The character goes ahead to say they love the way the other person looks at them while causing them pain. The relationship is entirely one-sided, and the singer is left feeling broken, with no sense of pride or control. They realize that they have given too much of themselves to the relationship and been taken advantage of and they should have forfeited the game earlier.

Overall, Pts.OF.Athrty is an emotional and powerful song that speaks to anyone who has been in a toxic relationship. The lyrics are straightforward, and the message is clear: sometimes it's better to quit the game and move on.

I was one of the animators on this video back in 2002. It was a lot of fun to work on. Interesting fact: Most of the animators and effects artists who made Firefly worked on this video. In fact, we did the pilot for Firefly right before this, and then started on the series not long after it.
