Close To You
Lionel Hampton & Dinah Washington Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
A song through its doors
Just as if it seems to know
I'm exclusively yours
Knowing this
I feel but one way
You will understand too
I'll close my eyes
To everyone but you
And when I do
I'll see you standing there
I'll lock my heart
To any other caress
I'll never say yes
To a new love affair
Then I'll close my eyes
To everything that's gay
If you are not there
Oh, to share each lovely day
And through the years
In those moments
When we're far apart
Don't you know I'll close my eyes
And I'll see you with my heart
In Lionel Hampton and Dinah Washington's song Close To You, the lyrics describe a deep and unbreakable love. The singer believes that heaven has sent a song specifically for them - a song that knows they are exclusively their lover's. This is the kind of love that is almost too good to be true - when love and fate seem to be working hand-in-hand. The singer feels certain that their lover will understand what they are saying, and they vow to close their eyes to everyone but their beloved. This gesture is not only symbolic - it is a promise, a commitment to exclusivity and faithfulness.

Heaven sends
A divine force brings a message to me
A song through its doors
The message is in the form of music
Just as if it seems to know
The divine force understands my innermost feelings and desires
I'm exclusively yours
I am completely devoted to you
Knowing this
With this in mind
I feel but one way
I have only one emotion
You will understand too
You share my feelings
In these words that I say
The message is conveyed through my words
I'll close my eyes
I will focus solely on you
To everyone but you
I will ignore all others
And when I do
When I focus on you
I'll see you standing there
I will visualize you in my mind's eye
I'll lock my heart
I will protect my heart from others
To any other caress
I will not let anyone else touch me in a loving or intimate way
I'll never say yes
I will not allow myself to fall for someone new
To a new love affair
I will not enter into a new relationship
Then I'll close my eyes
In addition to my previous focus on you
To everything that's gay
I will ignore all joyful or pleasant things
If you are not there
If you are not with me
Oh, to share each lovely day
I wish you were with me every day to experience the beauty of life
And through the years
Over the course of time
In those moments
During times of separation
When we're far apart
When we are physically distant
Don't you know I'll close my eyes
I will continue to think of you
And I'll see you with my heart
I will feel your presence with me always

Wow! Thanks for sharing! #JazzVocals
