Richie quit the band in 1981 for a solo career. He released his self-titled debut in 1982. The album hit No. 3 on the charts and sold over 4 million copies. His follow up album, Can't Slow Down, sold over twice as many copies and won the Grammy for Album of the Year in '84. His third album, '86's Dancing on the Ceiling spawned such hits as Say You, Say Me, Dancing on the Ceiling, and Se La, but would be the end of his commercial success.
His 90's albums such as Back to Front, Louder Than Words, and Time all failed to achieve the previous decade's commercial success. Some of his recent work, such as the album Renaissance, has returned to his older style, hoping to achieve more success.

Morning's just a moment away
And I'm without you once again
You laughed at me
You said you've never needed me
I wonder if you need me now
So many dreams that flew away
So many words we didn't say
Where'd we go, we lost what we both had found
You know we let each other down
But then most of all, I do love you
Still
We played the games that people play
We made our mistakes along the way
Somehow I know deep in my heart, you needed me
'Cause I needed you so desperately
We were too blind to see
But then most of all, I do love you
Still
The song "Still" by Lionel Richie & The Commodores is a touching ballad that explores the feelings of a person who is still in love with someone who left them. The lyrics talk about the pain and emptiness that the singer feels after their partner has left, and how they wonder if their former lover still needs them. The opening lines of the song set the mood by suggesting that the morning has arrived, but the singer is once again alone and without their former partner. This creates a sense of loneliness and loss in the listener, and prepares them for the emotional journey that the song takes them on.
As the song progresses, the singer reminisces about the dreams and aspirations that they shared with their former partner, but which were never fulfilled. They also think about the mistakes they made along the way, and how their blindness led to the breakdown of their relationship. Despite all of this, the singer cannot help but feel that they still love their former partner, and that their love for them still burns brightly.
The song has a powerful message about the resilience of love, and how it can survive even the darkest of times. It also highlights the importance of communication and understanding in any relationship, and how the failure to communicate can lead to the breakdown of even the strongest bonds.
