Datassette

1998, in London alone, I had a few hours to kill after my college interview and ended up buying this album from Tower Records in Piccadilly. I remember the checkout guy slightly sneering at my choice. Having no means to listen remotely, I had to wait until I got home to hear the full album, hundreds of miles up north, away from the all the chaos and excitement. This particular track, having heard it a million times on the "Brit Hop and Amyl House" mixtape a few years earlier, stood out initially as a familiar friend, but along with the rest of the album came to represent so much more for me — the hopes and dreams of a fresh start awaiting me in a new, dark, ominous but exciting city; the chaos, the loudness, the scale, the mystery. Time has not been kind to most music from this era, but this track still does the trick for me, it's simple but effective. An all-time classic and a real treasure to me.
