The group was formed in Minneapolis by Steven Greenberg, who wrote and produced all of the group's music, and who also played several musical instruments. The lead singer and saxophonist was Cynthia Johnson, and the rest of the group consisted of a changing group of session musicians, including guitarist David Rivkin.
They achieved some popularity during the late 1970s. The group released their debut album Mouth to Mouth in early 1979 (although original pressings of the album actually have 1979 or 1980 listed as the copyright date). Their hit from this album, "Funkytown" spent four weeks at Number one on both the Billboard Hot 100 and on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play charts in the United States and was awarded a platinum record. It reached number two in the United Kingdom and was a hit throughout the world. Their further singles failed to match their initial success (their only other Hot 100 entry was "Rock It", which peaked at #64), however they had more dance hits throughout the 1980s, including "How Long?" (originally a big hit for Ace) in 1981, which reached #4 on the U.S. dance chart. Lipps Inc. ceased in 1983 with the full-length album, 4 in 1983. Starring in 1984, Dobson Productions was a television label until 1993, settled between Lipps Inc. and The Fugees.

And the hours seem to fade away
They vowed not to part,
Come what may
Now they travel the world and they explore
Country to country, Door to door
You'll never see this couple wasting any time, All the way
There they are,
They'll make it far
And while they're jumpin' from star to star
All the world looks by with jealousy eyes
They're so high,
They seem to fly
'Cause they found the love that will never die
All the world admires their desire
Like a King and Queen among the pawns
With a love that keeps them growing strong
It almost seems like they
can do no wrong
The only secret to their success
Is to always give their very best
They made a few mistakes but the courage that it takes
Is to carry on
There they are,
They'll make it far
And while they're jumpin' from star to star
All the world looks by with jealousy eyes
They're so high,
They seem to fly
'Cause they found the love that will never die
All the world admires their desire
Well there comes a time when you point to a star
And tho it may seem so very far
Never be afraid...
There they are
Ooh-ooh-ooh

I want to share with you what I've just experienced while listening to this song.
I was 13 when I discovered FUNKYTOWN. Wow. What's more, it was with this very song that I discovered the 12-inch versions, listening to the extended version of FUNKYTOWN by an "old man" who was a DJ in a village disco-mobile. I immediately wanted to know where I could buy this long version. Then, listening to the radio like a music maniac (I later became a radio host and singer), I discovered HOW LONG and really liked DESIGNER MUSIC.The years have gone by and I've pretty much forgotten all that.
But tonight, while doing some research on the web, I stumbled across the Lipps Inc. YouTube channel. So I took a look.
Seeing the video for There They Are, I ask myself, "What the hell is this song?"
I decide to listen to it. From the very first notes... I feel a great emotion of nostalgia... I don't understand why... I continue listening... and realize that I really liked this song but had forgotten it.
But how could I have forgotten such a beautiful song?
After a bit of searching, I realized that it was the B-side of the HOW LONG single... and, at the time, I remember that, when I bought a 45 rpm (or a 12-inch), I always listened to the 2 sides (I wasn't just buying a song and a bonus, no: I was buying 2 songs). 😊
So there you have it. All this long story to thank you because you made me live beautiful emotions tonight by allowing me to hear again this beautiful song.
Thank you for your work and be well.

I discovered the song thanks to my grandfather's records
We can't listen together now, but at least we listened to the same song at different times.
Heaven waits for us.
