Sacrifice
Liquid Jesus Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
don't know how to choose
no time to mess around
there's too much confusion
restoration of a hymn
that i might sing a solution
i've got to sacrifice
i've got to sacrifice
too long
to continue on...
i asked a wildflower
why she seemed so lost
when she said,
if you didn't notice
there would really, really be
something wrong
you could say i would be a liar
if i was to say i was surprised
when they found her hanging
it was a sacrifice
sacrifice
she took her life
sacrifice
can't blame her for choosing
only for the reflection that she
left in our minds
she shut out the lights
with no goodnight
and no good-byes
only my reflection
of her sacrifice
and she said...
i've been around
too long
to continue on...
it was a sacrifice
she took her life
The lyrics of Liquid Jesus’s song “Sacrifice” speak to the struggle of decision making when one feels overwhelmed by the complexity of life. The singer is faced with a difficult decision and feels pinned down with no clear solution available. There is too much going on, and it feels like sheer chaos. However, he longs to find a solution, and in order to do that, he knows he must sacrifice. He has been around too long to continue on without making a decision. This idea of sacrifice is further reinforced by the story of the wildflower. The singer asks the flower why she seems so lost, and she responds that if he didn’t notice, there would really be something wrong. This implies that the sacrifice of the flower is necessary for the greater good, just as the singer must make a sacrifice to find a solution to his own problems.
However, the much darker theme of suicide is also present in the lyrics. The song speaks to the idea that some may choose suicide as a form of sacrifice. The singer is not surprised when the wildflower is found hanging, and he recognizes it as a sacrifice. He cannot blame her for choosing to take her life but acknowledges that it leaves a reflection in the minds of those left behind. The singer’s reflection on this tragedy leaves him with the realization that he, too, has been around too long to continue on without making a decision and that the act of making a sacrifice, no matter how painful, may lead to a solution.

Loss Orderly
Such a loose band, in the best sense. A quick reference point would be Blind Melon, with a dash of Jane's funk, and still that does them little justice. I bet Lars loves these guys.
