ある日小さな村に旅する
A wandering minstrel happened upon a small village one day.

吟遊詩人が訪れた
A minstrel came to visit.

まだ若い少女で
As a young girl,

旅も慣れてなかったけど
she was not yet used to traveling,

歌には自信がある
but she had confidence in her singing.

少女は村の中央にある
The girl sat in the center of the village,

広場に座りリュートを弾き
playing her lute and beginning to sing,

唄い始めた
but no one came out to listen.

でも誰ひとり出てこなかった
No one came out to listen,

聞こえていないのか
or so it seemed.

悩んだ末に出てこないなら
If they wouldn't come out even after worrying about it,

無理矢理でも聞こえるようにと
she would belt out her song like thunder to make them hear it.

雷鳴のように叫び唱った
She sang the song like a thunderous war cry,

それがみんなの心を震わせた
and the listener's hearts shook in response.

出てきた村人たちは
The villagers who came out,

みんな不気味な形をしてた
all had strange appearances,

少し恐かったけどやがて
which was a bit scary at first, but

打ち解けてた
they soon warmed up to her as she continued to sing.

歌を唄うたびに
Each time she sang,

「こんなわたしたちを見ても
they would say things like,

逃げないとは大したもんだ」
“She's got guts for sticking around even if we look like this!”

そう言う杖つくお爺さんが
One day, a cane-wielding old man approached her,

村長だった
who happened to be the village chief.

事情を聞いてみた
He asked her to tell him more about herself,

昔愚かな青年が居て
and she revealed the story of a foolish young man

国王の娘と恋をした
who fell in love with the king's daughter.

ふたりで駆け落ちを企てたけど
The two of them had planned to elope,

その途中で捕まってしまった
but were caught before they could escape.

国王は冷たく言い放った
The king then coldly decreed,

「こいつとその子孫にまで及ぶ異形の呪いをかけて野に捨てろと」
“Place a curse upon this fool and his descendants, and cast them away to the fields.”

ある日みんなが言ってくれた
One day, the villagers struck up a conversation,

「あなたの歌には不思議な力がある
saying things like,

曲がってた骨もこんな真っ直ぐに
“Your song has an incredible power to heal even crooked bones!”

もうすぐ治りそうだ」
and that their deformities would likely heal soon.

毎日こうしてこの村で
The young girl kept singing every day,

歌を聴かせてあげれれば
believing that if she could just help by singing,

呪いも解ける日が来る
the curse would one day be lifted.

そう思い始めてた
She clung to this thought without hesitation.

だけどその噂が広まり
However, someone caught wind of the rumors,

騎士が馬に乗りやってきて
and soon came riding in on horseback.

少女を連れ去って
Then they abducted the young girl

城の深い牢獄に閉じこめた
and locked her away in a deep cell in the castle.

国王が現れ
The king emerged from the shadows,

「その力は私のために使え」と言う
offering her to use her talents for his own benefit,

そんなのお断りだ!
to which she refused adamantly.

「ならそこで一生過ごすといい」と
She was left devastated as the king said,

告げ立ち去った
“Then may you spend your life rotting in this jail cell.”

泣いてなんかいられない
But she had no time to cry,

ここからでも歌を唄おう
for she knew that singing could lift one's spirits,

あの時も届いた さあ始めよう
She then began to sing and hoped that her song would reach the people she cared for,

終わりのない歌 を
and that this song would never end.

長い長い時が過ぎた
The years that passed were long and weary,

村にもまた春が訪れ
But spring still visited the small village,

子供たちは輪になり伝承の歌を謡う
and the children and villagers continued to sing the songs she taught them.

旅人が残した
As for the wanderer who came through town,

少女はまだ旅をしてた
the young girl was still out there somewhere,

もちろん大好きな歌を唄い
likely singing her heart out whenever the chance arose.

神様 叶うのなら
If there were a God up there,

あの村でもう一度みんなに会いたい
she would want nothing more than to see the people of her village once again,

もうこの世にあたしはいないけれど
even if she herself were no longer among the living.
