Love for Sale
Lisa Ekdahl & Peter Nordahl Trio Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When the only sound in the empty street
Is the heavy tread of the heavy feet
That belong to a lonesome cop
I open shop
When the moon so long has been gazing down
On the wayward ways of this wayward town
That her smile becomes a smirk
I go to work

Love for sale
Appetising young love for sale
Love that's fresh and still unspoiled
Love that's only slightly soiled
Love for sale
Who will buy?
Who would like to sample my supply?
Who's prepared to pay the price
For a trip to paradise?
Love for sale
Let the poets pipe of love
In their childish way
I know every type of love
Better far than they
If you want the thrill of love
I've been through the mill of love
Old love, new love
Every love but true love
Love for sale

Appetising young love for sale
If you want to buy my wares
Follow me and climb the stairs

Overall Meaning

The lyrics for Love for Sale by Lisa Ekdahl/Peter Nordahl Trio have a clear message of a woman selling her love to men who are willing to pay the price for it. The song starts in a deserted street with the only sound being the footsteps of a lonesome cop when the woman opens her shop, advertising her love for sale. The moon has been watching over the town for too long, and her smile has now turned into a smirk, marking her approval of the woman's profession. Despite the negativity and the unjustness of a woman selling love, she goes to work.

The chorus of the song, 'Love for sale, appetizing young love for sale, love that's fresh and still unspoiled, love that's only slightly soiled, love for sale.' continues to put forward the message that buying love is no different from buying any other commodity. She challenges the poets who talk about love in their 'childish way' by stating that she knows every type of love better than they do. The verses of the song suggest that her experiences of love are not primarily driven by emotions or desires but rather by monetary gains. She provides every type of love but true love, and everything she sells is up for purchase.

The song speaks out against prostitution and the unwanted exploitation of women. The lyrics convey the idea that women's love has been commodified for the satisfaction and fascination of men. The singer tells a story of a woman who has no choice but to sell her love to survive. It advocates for the respect and dignity of people, regardless of their circumstances, and aims to be thought-provoking and striking.

Sounds fair. It's a bit comedic. I liked it! Vs the original was much slower & dark...which more suitable to capture the vibe & nuance & mood of the meaning of this song! But still fairly tastefully done !
