A stunning vocalist, Hannigan regularly performed live with Rice from early 2001 until March 2007 when Rice's official website announced that his professional relationship with Hannigan had "run its creative course". During 2005 Hannigan and Rice co-wrote Unplayed Piano which was released to support the Free Aung San Suu Kyi 60th Birthday Campaign. Hannigan also appeared on backing vocals on Mic Christopher's album Skylarkin, as well as the soundtrack to "Goldfish Memory".
In 2006 Hannigan featured as part of The Cake Sale, a collective of mostly Irish, but featuring some international artists, formed by Brian Crosby of Bell X1. On 3rd November 2006 they released a self-titled album in Ireland to raise money for Oxfam and the Irish Make Trade Fair campaign. The album was so successful that it was given an international release the following year; released 10th September 2007 in the UK and 16th October 2007 in the US.
Hannigan has since gone on to pursue her own solo career, releasing her first album Sea Sew in Ireland on September 12th 2008, debuting at number 4 and earning her a Choice Music Prize nomination, two Meteor Music Award nominations and has been shortlisted for the Mercury Prize 2009. The album's first single was Lille followed by I Don't Know.
Sea Sew got an official US release on February 3rd 2009 and a UK release on May 4th 2009. On 21 July 2009, two days after a triumphant performance in torrential rain at the Latitude Festival, it was announced that Sea Sew had been nominated for the prestigious Mercury Music Prize in the UK.
The O Sleep Songfacts reports that Hannigan began writing for her second album in late 2009 and only completed it in March 2011. However, she and producer Joe Henry spent a mere week laying down the tracks in Wales. Passenger was released in the US and Canada on September 20, 2011 and in the Republic of Ireland on October 7, 2011.

Lisa Hannigan Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
so far to go,
and we've only just begun.
Oh, every lie we told
is written in stone,
every lie we wrote on our bones.
Hold on, there's nothing to pack.
Oh, every promise that we broke
is sewn to our clothes,
now we are pinned to the wind I suppose.
Oh, every falling flake of snow,
it has to give in,
oh but we spin and we spin and we spin.
Hold on, there's nothing to pack.
Lay your heart out, we're not coming back.
The lyrics of Lisa Hannigan's song "Home" are both hauntingly beautiful and full of depth. It speaks of a journey that is far from home and yet the destination seems as far. The beginning of the song sets the tone of a long journey ahead with the line "Home, so far from home, so far to go, and we've only just begun."
The second verse is poignant as it speaks of lies and promises made, with both being impossible to take back. "Every lie we told is written in stone, every lie we wrote on our bones." And then there's the realization that there's no going back with the line "Hold on, there's nothing to pack, we know we're not coming back." This is a journey of no return.
The third and final verse beautifully encapsulates the essence of the human spirit, marked by resilience and the will to survive. There is a sense of surrendering to the greater forces but at the same time an unyielding desire to never give up. "Oh but we spin and we spin and we spin." There is a sense of hope, of letting go of the past, and moving forward towards an unknown but potentially fulfilling future.
Overall, Lisa Hannigan's "Home" speaks of a journey of the self, of facing personal demons and overcoming them, and of the need to break free from the shackles of the past and move forward towards a brighter future filled with endless possibilities.

Home, so far from home,
Despite being far from what we consider home, we are together and moving forward.
so far to go,
The journey ahead is long and uncertain, but it's a journey we've committed to.
and we've only just begun.
Despite the distance and uncertainty, we are at the beginning of this journey.
Oh, every lie we told
Our past is filled with lies and deceptions,
is written in stone,
and the weight of those lies is everlasting, inescapable.
every lie we wrote on our bones.
These lies are not just in our past, but are an integral part of us now.
Hold on, there's nothing to pack.
We're not going back, so there's no need to carry anything with us.
We know we're not coming back.
Our decision to move forward is final.
Oh, every promise that we broke
We have also broken promises in the past,
is sewn to our clothes,
and these broken promises are a part of us, evident in our very clothing.
now we are pinned to the wind I suppose.
These broken promises are carried with us by the very winds that guide us forward.
Oh, every falling flake of snow,
And even the purest, most innocent things like snow,
it has to give in,
eventually give way to the compounding weight of our past and present.
oh but we spin and we spin and we spin.
But despite it all, we keep moving, constantly in motion.
Lay your heart out, we're not coming back.
We're moving forward, and we'll do so with everything we've got, leaving nothing behind.

The combination of Lisa Hannigan & Gavin Glass's writing skills made this song and album such a timeless piece of music magic! The writing and playing really captured what the whole band was feeling with the break from Damien Rice.

Lisa Hannigan is just a miracle to me. Her music opens a corridor to eternity for me. Don't we all want to come "home" (again)? Thank you so much for this - and so many more - beautiful song(s)!

Fire was unbearable. I don't need to feel spoonfed context for a performance by hearing random crackling louder than the actual song at times. Whoevers idea this was should not be contributing to anything ever again thanx

Her voice sounds like what having the love of someone for whom one's heart beats and then, forever, losing that love. It is pain and beauty and meaning, combined together in a song that reaches the deepest parts of one's soul.
