Accident
Lisa Loeb Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
She waltzes through her ballroom
Swirling in her sequins, showing off her gown
She steps on her own train
She falls, she cracks her jaw
Aghast her husband giggles
He gasps
She slipped on spilled champaigne
Chorus:
And we crowd around the accident
We want to see the worst
We crowd around the accident
We want to see what hurts
They're leaning in the corner
He's buried in a baggie
They say he's mischievous sometimes
She's pretty, and her elbows are so pointy
They're dangerous talking in the locker room
His nose bleeds so profusely
But no one tell him he's the star
They watch like at the movies that he's famous for
CHORUS
Two stories about to fall
Boasting at the swing set, marching down the hall
She yelled, 'cause he upset her desk
Don't yell
He's picking sides, he's hitching rides to school
His father left in winter
He's no one's son
If I can poke her with a pencil, I can pop her with a gun
CHORUS
We think...
I'm glad it wasn't me
And turn up the TV
And squeeze our eyes shut, but leave a space to see
The song "Accident" by Lisa Loeb explores the idea of people's morbid fascination with witnessing the misfortunes of others. The first verse describes an incident at a high society event where the heiress, who is lavishly dressed in sequins, accidentally steps on her own train, falls, and cracks her jaw. Her husband's reaction to the situation is to giggle at her misfortune. The chorus then highlights how people move towards accidents, seeking to see the worst, implying that we enjoy witnessing the pain of others.
The second verse of "Accident" describes how many people express their cruelty in different ways. One person is labeled mischievous but is still accepted; another person's elbows are dangerous, while someone else bleeds from the nose. In contrast, the third verse describes a school environment where bullying is present, and lines are drawn as everyone takes sides. The final line of the verse, "If I can poke her with a pencil, I can pop her with a gun," suggests that this behavior could escalate to deadly violence. The song's concluding line "We think, I'm glad it wasn't me," insinuates that the human fascination with others' pain is rooted in a sense of schadenfreude.
