Look Me in the Eye
Lisa Loeb Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

[Chorus]
Have you ever looked me in the eye?
Have you ever told the truth
Come on don't lie
Have you ever tried to know me better?
Better than you do

Bitch and moan
Away from home
I sit and stare stare
At the phone
Do you wait for it to ring?
Do you wait for it to ring?
Come on tell me the truth
Is that your thing?

[Chorus]

Do you demand a single thing?
I feel so selfish even asking
Do you know what I mean?
Do you know what I'm asking?
Oh won't you lavish me
Be fancy

[Chorus]

Look me in the eye
Look me in the eye

I can't believe I am surprised
After all this time
I think you'd know my eyes
Never thought of myself as a bleeder
But I leech on to you
What could be sweeter?
Pie, of course
But what could be worse?

That you don't look me in the eye
Look me in the eye

Look me in the eye
Look me in the eye

Overall Meaning

In the song Look Me In The Eye, Lisa Loeb calls out to her lover asking them if they have ever looked her in the eye and told the truth. She asks if they have ever tried to know her better than they do. She then goes on to ruminate on how she constantly waits by the phone for them to call her and questions whether her lover does the same. Loeb candidly reveals her vulnerability, confessing that she feels guilty for demanding anything from her lover even though she desires to be lavished on. The chorus repeats the central theme of the song, asking if her lover would meet her gaze and be honest with her, and inviting them to look into her eyes.

The second verse reveals Loeb's affection for her lover. She proclaims how she has never thought of herself as a bleeder but finds herself leeching on to her lover, clinging to them like a parasite. She contrasts the sweetness of the experience with the bitter feeling that her lover won't even look at her when she wants to be seen. The song ends with Loeb pleading again with her lover to look her in the eye and connect with her authentically.
