Split Second
Lisa Loeb Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
One second longer than I had to be there
Stuck inside the door.
I'm always scared I'll slam my fingers in the door
Because the last time that I left
I slammed my fingers in the door.
When you want to get out
You get up and walk straight to the door.
Thinking that one second longer
That a car could hit me in it
If I thought more than I did.
The lyrics to Lisa Loeb's song Split Second seem to be about being stuck in a situation that you desperately want to get out of, and the fear of prolonging it. The opening line, "I did not want to be stuck one second longer than I had to be there," sets the tone for the rest of the song. This feeling of being stuck is further emphasized by the line "stuck inside the door," which could be interpreted metaphorically as feeling trapped or unable to escape.
The lyrics then shift to a personal experience of the singer, where she shares a fear of "slamming my fingers in the door." This not only adds another layer of vulnerability to the lyrics but also highlights the dangers of rushing to escape a situation. The line "if I thought more than I did" suggests that overthinking can also be problematic and could lead to regret or missed opportunities.
Overall, Split Second seems to be a simple and relatable song about wanting to move on from a situation but not wanting to risk any unnecessary delay or danger.
