The Best is Yet to Come
Lisa Stansfield Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Out of the tree of life I just picked me a plum
You came along and everything started to hum
Still it's a real good bet, the best is yet to come

The best is yet to come and babe, won't that be fine
You think you've seen the sun but you ain't seen it shine
Wait till that warmup's underway, wait 'til our lips have met
Wait till you see that sunshine day, you ain't seen nothin' yet

[Chorus]
The best is yet to come and babe, won't that be fine
The best is yet to come, come the day that you're mine

Come the day you're mine
I'm gonna teach you to fly
We've only tasted the wine
We're gonna drain the cup dry

Wait 'til your charms are ripe for these arms to surround
You think you've flown before but honey, you ain't left the ground
Wait 'til you're locked in my embrace, wait 'til I draw you near
Wait 'til you see that sunshine place, ain't nothin' like it here

[Chorus]

Come the day your mine
And you're gonna be mine

Overall Meaning

In Lisa Stansfield's song "The Best is Yet to Come," the singer expresses her optimistic outlook on life and love. In the first verse, she compares her recent good fortune to picking a perfect plum off the tree of life. When her lover comes into her life, everything seems to become alive and vibrant. However, she still believes that the best is yet to come, indicating that her happiness will continue to grow and blossom as time passes. The chorus repeats this sentiment, emphasizing the excitement and eagerness she feels for what the future holds.

The second verse describes the singer's plans for the future with her lover. She promises to teach him how to "fly" and to fully embrace life by indulging in its pleasures, compared to only "tasting" the wine. She encourages him to wait until he's ready to fully indulge in life and love with her, until they are both "locked in [each other's] embrace" and experiencing a moment of pure joy.

Overall, "The Best is Yet to Come" is a song that captures the essence of hope, love and optimism. The writer uses vivid and colorful imagery to describe how life and love can be sweet and satisfying. The song's upbeat tempo and catchy tunes add to its positive message, making it an anthem for anyone seeking hope in life's journey.

All around the world
All Woman
Change
Give me just a little more love
Set your loving free
So natural
The real thing
This is the right time
Time to make you mine
What did I do to you
You can't deny it
Someday i'm coming back
People hold on

There are probably more, that I can't recall

The "best ever" is subjective, but it's a pretty good list of quality music

OUT.OF.THE.BOX.ROBOT :

I think you miss the point.

Tina (Teena) Marie, DID NOT sing Northern Soul genre.

Lisa Stansfield, put Northern Soul on the map in the United States and made it sound authentic and true. You can’t vocally riff Northern Soul the same way you could Motown Soul. It would not come out right if you tried. Northern Soul, is its own unique signature with its own tonal dialect.

Nobody epitomizes Northern Soul the way Lisa Stansfield has over the decades.

Whitney Houston, Anita Baker, Mariah Carey, Stephanie Mills and Heather Headley, are just four (4) of the highest quality female pop vocals ever recorded. Yet absolutely NONE OF THEM could ever do Northern Soul justice, the way Lisa Stansfield did it.

Lisa Stansfield WAS Northern Soul defined. She made it popular in the United States. She redefined it as something unique and only Lisa Stansfield makes Northern Soul “cool” to listen to.

You can’t sing this like American Soul. I won’t come out right. It would come off over cooked and over baked. If you brought full blown Motown Soul annunciation and articulation to Northern Soul, it would simply be too much for the vessel.

Northern Soul requires smoother transitions and a continuous flowing connection between words and phrases that full blown American Soul would overheat and smoke out with its slower transitions and highly variable inflections. You can’t do that. It would be like trying to output Beethoven’s 5th in G using a 4:4 beat and then varying the Time Signature in the middle of the of the melody.
