Very informative documentary. The simbiotic relationship of trees and survival of humans that depend on the air to breathe can not be underestimated. Admirable policy to plant trees to combat the shifting desert and the importance of life giving water.

A really hard life endured by the nomadic peoples of the north Africa. The Sahara may have been a paradise many thousands of years ago, but, not in our times. Knowledge of the desert helps the people and what knowledge these nomads have.

The images are fantastic, many thanks for sharing this with us. If I may make a comment here about climate change. The climate in this part of the world has been changing for millions of years. (As has the rest of this planet as well). This record exists in geology structures, deep sea sediments, ice cores, ancient tree rings, and continental crust movements. To name a few methods. One Youtube channel that covers this is worth looking at. PBS Eons. Worth noting here is the rainfall in SW Africa, and Saudi Arabia recently. I used to watch documentaries like this in the weekend with my father when I was a kid. English is not my mother language. At the time, I couldn't understand a thing. The only thing piqued my interest is the view of nature. That very moment, I felt no worrisome, totally immersed in the moment. Such peaceful moment that I could never experience anymore.

I am from the Himalayan place Named "Sikkim" I feel very disheartened to see the living conditions of animals and plants out there deprived of water and had to face consequence which is caused by humans out there and far here . Water is invaluable here are alas! We don't care to turn off the tap we just poke a pipe to the source and draw water and don't care about overflowing. I am sorry for wasting water and I hope green wall will help restore grasslands and thriving biodiversity .

I just wonder, with such little population, can we be really sure that it's manmade climate change that causes "desertification," or is it just nature's way? It is already settled that the Sahara area (and earth itself) has for thousands of years have gone through changes that not even men were responsible for.

@Julie Earp As a matter of fact I have! I have traveled Africa especially Sahara several times with motorcycles the last 20 years and Im going back next year. I haven’t noticed any big changes but you can look at photos and satellite images. Over 30 years the Sahara desert have shrunk as much as the area of Germany and France together . This is open information from several geo satellites. Some claim that it because of higher co2 levels that have a positive effect on the vegetation of the region. You also have to understand that local sand migration is affected by overpopulation, agriculture, animals and is common in all desert environment. There is buildings that are buried in sand in Denmark it’s called sand migration not desertification. The memories of people is short.

well, i live in Algeria where is situated the largest part of the sahara desert and the shale gas is the biggest issue here bc the governement doesn't care about water sources pollution by the shale gas and now half of underground water in sahara is polluted bc of this ..
ps : water is everywhere in the sahara but you can't see it it's deep underground ;)

15:05 I'd put a solar powered water-pump in that oasis to trickle water up to the highest point where vermicasting would be done on old palm leaves/fronds in pits near hugelkultur. Then grow trees high up, there.

I love the fact that the sahara covers 8 million km2 = and that's a very very big area . now each part of it is attached to a country ( south of tunisia , lybia , egyp) ( north of mali , niger , tchad , mauritania) and then when you speak about morocco ~ sudfenly it's the western sahara?? come on be serious and logical !! so , we need to have a new country ONLY in the south of morocco ?? cut the crap !! where is the logic ??
