This song really touches a nerve in me. I went off to college in 1971 and my girlfriend (senior in high school) promised she would wait for me to return and we'd get married. We were too young to know how life works. Our love letters gradually got colder and colder. Eventually we broke up by way of nasty letters. My heart was broken. Then this song starts playing on the radio. It seemed like the writer knew my story exactly. Every time I hear this song, it takes me back to that painful time in my youth. Well, we eventually did get back together. We are still happily married with two sons and four grandchildren.

From white boy rock..CCR, Stones, Eagles, Joe Cocker etc to soul, Marvin Gaye, Gladys Knight, Stevie Wonder etc to pop, John Denver, ABBA, Leo Sayer etc. All of these groups existed on the same channel back then! Coexistence and a cross pollination that I miss badly

I wasn’t born when this music came out, but my mom would play it around the house and still plays it to this day. This brings back memories from when I was a little girl riding home from school. Momma would play this and other old school jams. This is actually my favorite kind of music vs my era (I was born in ‘86). This music is so heartfelt and actually has depth to it. I guess I really am an old soul after all. 😊

Back in the early 70s I was into bands like Purple, Zeppelin, Floyd, etc., and still am, then this song came along and I thought it was so beautiful. Just listened for the first time in many years and it's just as nice as ever. Also, some beautiful comments and sentiments on this stream, no nasty cynical troll stuff and I'm glad to be part of it. In 1971 I was 10 yrs old. I always adored this song. It reaches to the core of your heart and soul. I feel fortunate to have had intelligent, thoughtfull, music in my time. I was about 7 when this music was popular and remember watching the Chi-lites, The Manhattans, and so many other great soul groups on TV, with my sisters, and even witnessed the transition into Disco from there! Looking at today's music, I believe there exists great talent but a basic lack of bravery to write lyrics with substance and sincere respect for that other person because it's not viable as a commodity. I'm just wondering if I am alone in wondering what happened to the songs that said "only death is worse than loosing you, this is why..." without feeling weak or insecure in yourself, be it man or woman? Maybe I'm getting old, or maybe I'm naïve, but I FEEL lyrics like these and when I hear modern R&B, it feels like I only UNDERSTAND it instead of feel it.

I can not believe its been 49 years since this first came out back in 1970. I was a 15 year old sophomore back then, and this group from Chicago [Chi-lites] were always on the charts back then. Now that I am 65 years old this song still captures my heart. Priceless!

Classic Soul. I remember when this and other great music was on the radio. Man, you can't beat the '70's. Classic Rock, Soul, Blues, great Country music was being written. It was all good, brother.
