I prefer Harry Nilsson's "Cant Live without You." This song is more for when you were young and carefree.getting over a puppy love or first crush. Harry Nilsson' sang it with crushing heart ache for those older and more brittle from a lifetime of battles and scars. Maybe some Sinatra too.

I know. This song really nails it when it reaches the chorus, reminds me of the time I was so obsessive and felt like I just couldn't fight it. I don't like being in love but it is still a beautiful, natural, powerful thing. This song really nails it. The Nilsson song, mentioned above, is passionate but a little waily and clutchy imo.

Agreed!! I have to believe that when this 'take' was completed in the studio, it was 'known' that 'they' had something special. No doubt there are other recordings that are special in their way (no matter the genre)... This recording is one of those special recordings. Musicianship of the orchestra, vocals, 'treatment' given to the recording for how things would sound, everything. Just a wonderful (and special) recording. Even at (I believe) 54 years old.

How long has it been since weve ever heard a Xylophone in a song? Or a soaring single violin like in "Hurts So Bad" reaching up way high in the octaves--- brings shivers down my spine , soo beautiful!! Great music in the 80's and 70's but there was something genuinely unique and innocent about the music of the'60's.... makes me GLAD I was born in 1960!! Got to see Little Anthony twice in the last 8 years and he still sounds as good as he did the first time I saw him in Houston in the spring of 1963. One of the greatest groups ever and still going strong. I was in middle school when I first heard that memorable voice on 'Tears On My Pillow' from a bygone era that will never be duplicated. Keep on rockin' Little Anthony and the Imperials you are one of the giants of the greatest era in music.

You know, I get the impression that writers of an era get into a sort of style, feel, chords, etc. I'm strongly influenced by this era, where I grew up from childhood. Now I am sixty two looking at my golden years ahead realizing I grew up during the early years after my favorite performer, Elvis Presley introduced the world to Rick. My goodness, you talk about fate and the underlying perfection in it. This song was composed and arranged in a manner that brought out the talent and brilliance of Little Anthony & The Imperials. The lyrics coupled to a beautiful melody were made into poetry. It was given to them at a time when they were at the height of their musical potential. It caught the interest of listeners throughout the world, including Ed Sullivan and Dick Clark, who invited them to their respective shows to perform the song. I was a child of 8 when the song was released in November of 1964, but I got a sense, even as a child, that this song was a timeless masterpiece. It had a story that conveyed an intense sentimentality for an unrequited love that melted the listener's heart. Nearly 56 years later, the song is as emotionally intense and moving as it was in 1964. Remarkable!!
