One Night In October
Little Comets Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh language is dead,
So she believes,
I'm looking up,
Socially bereaved,
Just like Carlisle,
She lies on the border,
Disorder surrounds,
Her every noun,

One Night In October,
The clocks go back,
And she attacks me oh,
Grabbing my left shoulder,
Suspects in texts that leave her wrecked-uh-oh,
One night in October,

I sit her down,
And say this must stop,
'Cos all we do,
Is argue then shop,
She goes to Boots,
I go to Argos,
Complete with deceit,
We stalk each aisle,

One night in October,
She throws a towel, the sink, a scowl-uh-oh,
One night in October,
With more invective,
Than the average detective,

Questions me on the lawn,

With doors ajar,
Tonight I will sleep in my car,
One night in October,

Oh intensive care,
Intensively she's aware,
That I, I miss the heat,
Solace and sway of the sheets,
Oh, this dashboard's so hard,
Can't cushion the beats of my heart,

One night in October,
Oh oh,

One night in October,
The clocks go back,
And she attacks me oh,
Grabbing my left shoulder,
With more invective,
Than the average detective,
Questions me on the lawn,

With doors ajar,

Tonight I might sleep in the car,
One night in October,

Overall Meaning

The song "One Night In October" by Little Comets is a complex tale of a troubled relationship. The first verse introduces the idea that communication has broken down between the two parties, with the line "Oh language is dead, so she believes." The singer is socially isolated, as indicated by the line "I'm looking up, socially bereaved." The reference to Carlisle, a town on the border of Scotland and England, suggests a sense of being caught between two places or states of being. The disorder that surrounds the woman's every noun highlights the chaos that exists within her mind.

The chorus of the song centers around a specific night in October when the clocks go back. The woman attacks the singer, grabbing his left shoulder and berating him with questions and suspicion. She throws a towel, the sink, and a scowl, indicating her intense anger and frustration. Despite the drama of the situation, the lyrics are laced with humor and irony, as demonstrated by the line "Complete with deceit, we stalk each aisle" - an absurd image of two people pretending to shop while secretly spying on each other.

The second verse shows the aftermath of the fight, as the singer tries to convince the woman that their constant arguing is making things worse. She goes to Boots, he goes to Argos, and they both try to distract themselves from the issues in their relationship. Despite this temporary respite, the woman continues to question him aggressively, until the singer is forced to flee to his car to escape.

Overall, "One Night In October" is a powerful and emotional depiction of a dysfunctional relationship. Through clever wordplay and vivid imagery, Little Comets captures the confusing and painful experience of feeling trapped in a cycle of argument and resentment.

I miss these indie days, felt like a band who wrote and performed their own songs could change the world and influence a generation, my music producer friend and I used to jam to the little comets all the time, I wanna throw him some love as we've been through so much together over the years, try searching Lonely Gimmick - Beaches, its got that old school indie sound and its one of those songs that makes me happy when I listen to it. I'm honestly so impressed he made it, did it all himself on his laptop
