The John Wayne
Little Green Cars Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's easy to fall in love
It's easy to fall in love with you

It's easy to fall in love
It's easy to fall in love with you

You go outside dressed like that
You knew what was going to happen didn't you
You talk to me like that
You knew I was slowly falling in love with you

And I...ooh

And I...ooh

You know it's your neglect
is the reason that I'm so obsessed with you
And when I asked you your name you said John Wayne
And I guess it's true
Coz then you shot me down
Doubled over and I hit the ground right in front of you
I guess in the Wild West
it's ok to shoot the pest that's annoying you

And I...ooh

And I...ooh

It's easy to fall in love
It's easy to be alone
It's easy to hate yourself
when all your love is inside someone else
It's easy to take it all
It's easy to give it to
when there's more people out there to love
than people who love you

And I...ohh

It's easy to fall in love
(It's easy to fall in love with you)
The reason that I'm so obsessed
(You knew what was going to happen didn't you)
I guess in the Wild West
(You knew I was slowly falling in love with you)

It's easy to fall in love
It's easy to fall in love with you

Overall Meaning

Little Green Cars' song "The John Wayne" is a bittersweet love song about falling in love with someone who does not reciprocate those feelings. The lyrics of the song start by asserting that it is easy to fall in love with this person. The singer goes on to describe how this person dresses and speaks, making it clear that they knew what effect they had on the singer. The singer is slowly falling in love with this person, and they know it. The irony is that the object of the singer's affection does not feel the same way.

The lyrics take a turn in the second verse as the singer blames their obsession on this person's "neglect." The person they are in love with is not interested in them, and that only makes the singer more obsessed. The reference to John Wayne is interesting because it suggests that this person embodies some kind of masculine ideal that the singer finds attractive. However, the fact that the singer gets shot down by this person suggests that this ideal is not attainable, or at least not for the singer.

In the last verse, the singer laments the difficulty of being in love and the feelings of loneliness that can come with it. Even though it is easy to fall in love, it is also easy to hate yourself when the person you love does not love you back. Despite this, the singer still finds it easier to give love than to receive it, even though there are "more people out there to love than people who love you." Ultimately, the song seems to be about the pain of unrequited love and the idea that sometimes falling in love is both easy and incredibly hard.

That's just a really good lyric omg.

It is. It reminds me of Peter Steele's quote in the liner notes for Type-O Negative's 'Bloody Kisses': "Base not your joy upon the deeds of others, for what is given can be taken away."

So gutted to have missed these guys when they were touring live. Phenomenal band. I hear they've all moved on to other projects now... Little Green Cars' catalogue of work will always be small but fantastic and memorable. Absolute hidden gem. I'm excited to hear their newer work and if they ever came back together, you just know it would be great!

Your right. It's all art. And I'm happy they made this

Great band. Miles better than most of their contemporaries. Sometimes the vocals sound like 'Mamas and the Pappas'. The music touches on the 60s, indie 80s. Good production with well though out arrangements. They deserve wider acclaim.
