Do You Love Me
Little Richard Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Why don't you love me like you used to do?
How come you treat me like a worn out shoe?
My hair's still curly and my eyes are still blue
Why don't you love me like you used to do?

Ain't had no lovin' like a huggin' and a kissin'
In a long, long while
We don't get nearer, further
Closer than a country mile

Why don't you spark me like you used to do?
And say sweet nothing's like you used to coo
I'm the same old trouble that you've always been through
So why don't you love me like you used to do?

Well, why don't you just be like you used to be?
How come you find so many faults with me?
Somebody's changed so gimme a clue
Why don't you love me like you used to do?

Ain't had no lovin' like a huggin' and a kissin'
In a long, long while
We don't get nearer, further
Closer than a country mile

Why don't you say the things you used to say?
What makes you treat me like a piece of clay?
My hair's still curly and my eyes are still blue
Why don't you love me like you used to do?

Why don't you love me like you used to do?
Why don't you love me like you used to do?

Overall Meaning

In Little Richard’s song “Do You Love Me?” the lyrics convey a heartbroken lover questioning why their partner doesn’t love them like they used to. The lyrics highlight the distance that has grown between the two, illustrated by not having had any intimate moments like hugging or kissing in a long time. The lover pleads with their partner to show some affection, asking for them to speak softly and to find that spark that they once had. The chorus repeats the same question, emphasizing the lover’s confusion and desperation. The song’s repeated mentions of curly hair and blue eyes add to the notion that the lover feels they haven’t changed at all and are still the same person their partner once loved.

The song’s lyrics reveal a common sentiment felt by many who have experienced heartbreak – the feeling of wondering what went wrong and why the love that used to be there has disappeared. Little Richard’s expression of this feeling through the lyrics is a testament to the emotional depth of the song.

Props to whoever made the decision to record this classic on color video tape. It's timeless and is probably one of the oldest music videos around.

this is a remaster

Jon Martinez

@thomas agustin Yeah it's remastered, but it was originally recorded on 2-inch videotape, which is why it's so smooth and lacks grain. Motown did that with their artists.

There was really something special about music during this time. Nothing these days just makes me feel so excited this kind of music does.

As much as I love the Tremeloes' version the original is still the best!

For straight ahead true rock and roll, it doesn't get better than this. I was a HS sophomore when this gem came out. We'd dance like crazy every time it came on. Watch me now, hey!!!
