Freedom Blues
Little Richard Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I hope that I should live to see,
When every man can know he's free.
Sufferin' from the past.
I make I ought to be sad

I got my duty rock and roll,
Now everybody, everybody, everyone's gotta be free!
Oh...

Now la-la, la-da-da-da.
La-la, la-da da-da.

Mmmm, let's get rid of that old man, hey-ey-ey,
And bring our government up to date.
It may be very hard to do,
Just open your mind, let love come through.

You hear me callin' you my?
Everybody, everybody, everyone's gotta be free!
Oh yes!

La-la, la-da-da-da.
La-la, la-da da-da.

We did our thing every thing and we paid our dues,
Now let's get rid of these freedom blues.
It may be very hard to do,
Just open your mind, let love come through.

I got my duty rock and roll,
Now everybody, everybody, everyone's gotta be free!
Oh...

La-la, la-da-da-da.
La-la, la-da da-da.

La-la, la-da-da-da.
La-la, la-da da-da.

Overall Meaning

Little Richard's song, Freedom Blues, is a call to action for equality and personal freedom. The lyrics express his desire to see a time when every man understands that he is free from the suffering of the past. There is a sense of sadness in acknowledging the injustices of the past, but with rock and roll as his duty, Little Richard encourages everyone to join in the fight for freedom. He sings of the need to update government and let love guide us to the realization of our collective freedom. Little Richard's conviction of the necessity of freedom for everyone is reflected in the repetition of the lines "everybody, everybody, everyone's gotta be free." The song encourages its audience to open their minds and embrace love as a means to accomplish the hard work of personal and social liberation.

Wherever you are now, Richard, I hope they don't try to make you sign away the rights to your songs. Thanks for the great music, and thanks for giving that kid Jimi a shot.

Love Little Richard! I saw him when he was in his 70s, and he was still an amazing piano player. Love this song and I love what he did for rock and blues-rock.

RIP Richard. I played this album into the ground when it came out. I was so surprised when he came out with new stuff back then.

I truly believed Little Richard was on his way to a great comeback with this album and these songs. All excellent and on Frank Sinatra's label -- Reprise. Little Richard was in fine voice and his band was tight. But nothing came of it unfortunately....but that doesn't mean the music doesn't matter. It's still excellent.

Comeback or not, this is a great tune

You said it brother . We got two hits off the album but it missed the billboard album charts .
Then we wait for about a year for the underproduced and very Pop second reprise album , although it had 3-4 great tracks and DID flirt w the top 200. Third released reprise album almost brought me to tears , overproduced with the only poor vocals he ever laid down to date . We had an oddball w unreleased reprise material and true stereo, long versions of stuff from 1964 on an ala records release , mixed in. Now we see a good country Rock album was apparently prepped for the summer if 1972 but cast aside !
Some good guest shots however kept us going , particularly his piano work on Delaney and Bonnie's cover of Miss Ann. Around 2013, Joe Walsh finally released Richards fantastic , hitworthy collaboration on But I Try. Was apparently prepped but dropped at the time . Could have made some noise on FM stations .
Richard got his voice back on later albums ...but the Grammy quality Rill Thing still rang true as the greatest comeback album ever ...richard never sounded greater .

I recall Richard said on TV , he put ally of his own money into the promotion !
I heard several of the tracks on both am and FM stations out of New York City ...and was heartbroken when I saw it missed the top 200 on billboard magazine .well, we got two pretty song hits on this and Greenwood , Mississippi .

One thing with artists like Little Richard....these guys were the trailblazers, nobody then knew in 1970 (or even now) when they would end. How long would the original rock and rollers go on with new and relevant music?
