It's Too Late Brother
Little Walter Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Ain't no need-a goin' no further, brother
Ain't no need-a goin' no further, man
Told you back in forty-five you had better quit that jive
Ain't no need-a goin' no further, man

Ain't no need-a goin' no further, brother
Ain't no need-a goin' no further, man
You thought you was pretty slick, takin' everybody's chick
Ain't no need-a goin' no further, brother

Ain't no need-a goin' no further, brother
Ain't no need-a goin' no further, man
You had diamonds and Cadillac cars
Tourin' the world and settin' up bars
Ain't no need-a goin' no further, now

Ain't no need-a goin' no further, brother
Ain't no need-a goin' no further, man
Your money's gone and your health is bad
All you can tell is the fun you had

Ain't no need-a goin' no further, now
No, ain't no need-a goin' no further, now

Overall Meaning

In "It's Too Late Brother," Little Walter tells the story of a man who had it all but lost everything in the end. The song opens with the repetition of the titular line, "Ain't no need-a goin' no further, brother," which is a forewarning to the man of his impending demise. Little Walter then specifically calls the man out, reminding him that he was warned about his foolish behavior back in 1945 but did not listen. The man thought he was "pretty slick" for taking everyone's girl, but the reality is that he is going nowhere now.

The second verse further highlights the man's previous success, but ultimately this is juxtaposed with his current state of failure. The man had diamonds and drove a Cadillac, but now his money is gone and his health is ruined. He can only look back on the good times he had. The repetition of "Ain't no need-a goin' no further, now" serves as a reminder to the listener that all of this is a result of the man's own actions and decisions. The song is a cautionary tale of how fortune and fame can be fleeting if you do not make wise choices throughout life.

These lyrics are true for every human ever born. At life's end all you have is the fun you've had.

Such a warm and gritty tone. Many emulate it, but no one can reproduce it.

Love Little Walters Harping!!!!

Brian J. Carnevale

Marion Walter Jacobs, known as Little Walter, was an American blues musician, singer, and songwriter, whose revolutionary approach to the harmonica had a strong impact on succeeding generations, earning him comparisons to such seminal artists as Django Reinhardt, Charlie Parker, and Jimi Hendrix.

Born: May 1, 1930, Marksville, LA
Died: February 15, 1968, Chicago, IL

He played the Harmonica & guitar and did the vocals with his distinct Louisana drawl!

Brian J. Carnevale

The official cause of death stated on his death certificate was coronary thrombosis (a blood clot in the heart); evidence of external injuries was so insignificant that the police reported that his death was due to "unknown or natural causes", and no external injuries were noted on the death certificate.

Sadly enough he was only 38 years young when he passed.

RIP BROTHA!

The greatest.
