Sloppy Drunk
Little Walter Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I would rather be sloppy drunk, than anything I know
I would rather be sloppy drunk, than anything I know
Give me another half a pint boy, then you will see me go

Now I love that moonshine whiskey now, tell the world I do
Yes I love that moonshine whiskey now, tell the world I do
Now this is the reason why that I drink, I'm just trying to get along with you
I said oh, oh, bring me another half a pint
I said mmmmh, bring me another half a pint
Well I believe I'll get drunk boy, and then we gonna rock this joint

Well I love that moonshine whiskey now, tell the world I do
Yes I love that moonshine whiskey now, tell the world I do
Now this is the reason why that I drink, I'm just trying to get along with you

I said oh, oh, bring me another half a pint

I said mmmmh, bring me another half a pint
Well I believe I'll get drunk boy, and then we gonna rock this joint

Overall Meaning

The song "Sloppy Drunk" by Little Walter is about alcoholism and the struggles of addiction. The singer in the song, Little Walter, would rather be "sloppy drunk" than anything else he knows, indicating that he is more comfortable with his addiction than with sobriety. He requests another half pint of alcohol and believes that it will help him "get along" with the people around him, suggesting that he may use alcohol to cope with social anxiety or other emotional issues. The chorus, which repeats throughout the song, emphasizes the singer's love for moonshine whiskey and his plans to "rock this joint" once he is drunk.

The lyrics of "Sloppy Drunk" suggest that the singer is caught in a cycle of addiction in which alcohol is both a source of comfort and a cause of problems in his life. He wants to get drunk to have fun and socialize, but his excessive drinking may lead to negative consequences such as impaired judgment, health issues, or strained relationships. The song's upbeat tempo and Little Walter's electrifying performance on the harmonica add to the ambivalence of the lyrics, creating a sense of both joy and despair.

Little Walter's greatest tenure - the early to mid 50's. He is just lethal on this track, the fills and are perfect and solos amazing. Loved his work as an accompanist, sometimes prefer over his own signing tracks.
