Howlin' Wolf
Little Walter & Muddy Waters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm a howlin' wolf
I've been howlin' all 'round your door
I'm a howlin' wolf
I've been howlin' all 'round your door

I see your smiling face
You won't hear me howl no more
When I start-ta howlin'
Dig me a hole down in the ground
When I start-ta howlin'
Dig me a hole down in the ground

Some people call me a black panther
But my baby, she knows the way I sound

I howled all night long
Everyday I lays up and take my sleep
I howls all night long
Everyday I lays up and take my sleep

After sundown

That's when I makes my full decree
([Incomprehensible])

Overall Meaning

In the song "Howlin' Wolf" by Little Walter and Muddy Waters, the lyrics tell the story of a man who identifies himself as a howling wolf. This is not to be taken literally, but rather represents his wild and untamed nature, which is reflected in his actions and emotions. He describes how he has been howling around someone's door, which could be seen as his attempt to gain their attention or recognition.

The repetition of the line "I'm a howlin' wolf, I've been howlin' all 'round your door" emphasizes the persistence and determination of the singer. Despite not being heard, he continues to express himself through his howling. This could be interpreted as a metaphor for his struggle to be noticed or acknowledged by the person he is addressing.

The mention of the singer seeing a smiling face suggests that the person he is howling for is within sight. However, he laments that despite the proximity, his howling goes unnoticed. This could represent feelings of unrequited love or a desire for validation from someone who seems to be indifferent or disinterested.

The following lines, "When I start-ta howlin', dig me a hole down in the ground, some people call me a black panther, but my baby, she knows the way I sound," delve deeper into the singer's self-image. The metaphor of digging a hole in the ground when he starts howling could symbolize the depth of his emotions or the intensity with which he expresses himself. The reference to being called a black panther suggests that he is seen as powerful and fierce by some, but it is only his lover or "baby" who truly understands him.

In the final verse, the singer reveals that he howls all night long and takes rest during the day. This could be interpreted as his internal struggle, where during the night, when darkness falls and his inhibitions fade, he allows himself to fully express his emotions and desires through his howling. However, during the day, he suppresses these feelings and retreats into slumber. The mention of making his "full decree" after sundown suggests that the night is when he feels most liberated and empowered to proclaim himself.

The last line of the lyrics, "[Incomprehensible]," signifies the singer's inscrutability or perhaps an unintelligible expression of his emotions. It leaves the listener to ponder the true depth and meaning behind his howling. Overall, the song "Howlin' Wolf" expresses the longing for recognition and understanding, the struggle to find one's place in the world, and the complex emotions that come with self-expression and vulnerability.

This scene portrays him
accurately because after
I re-watched a documentary
about Howlin' Wolf a while back,
I've learned that Wolf was verbally
assertive and fiercely aggressive
when it came letting people know
who was in charge and not only that..
he also made sure everyone knew
how to be & play in a band 🐺

Howlin Wolf was one of the only band leaders that did it right from that time period. Fair pay, insurance, paid into their SSI, and didn't allow any drugs or alcohol use when touring. According to everyone that knew him, he was fiercely loyal to his wife. Who do you know these days that all of that is true of?

I knew nothing of the blues and never even heard the name Howlin Wolf til I saw this movie, then I started listening to his songs and came across Spoonful, good lord this guy had a voice that was just unreal. I've gotten into a lot of great older blues musicians over the last year but Howlin Wolf is definitely my favorite. You can truly feel the power and emotion through his voice, it's really something special!
