Ausência
Liuba María Hevia Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Ausencia remoto fantasma
que violas las puertas que cantas
que gritas al cielo esa voz
que has llevado contigo

Overall Meaning

Liuba Maria Hevia's song "Ausencia" is about the pain of missing someone, and the different ways in which that absence can be felt. The opening lines speak of the way some absences are like forgetfulness, they cover over the dawn and the seeds that were meant to grow. The idea of something lost forever in the sea is evoked, suggesting that some absences will never be recovered. The pain of losing someone is further highlighted in the following lines which speak of a sense of jealousy with which we guard memories and of the way in which flowers can seem like cruel jailers.

Hevia's lyrics go on to describe absence as a haunting presence, a ghostly figure that breaches doors and wails into the sky. This is a powerful image of how absence becomes a constant companion, no less real than a physical presence. However, the song doesn't only deal with the sorrow of isolation. There is hope too. The chorus speaks of the gulls that soar overhead, unfettered by borders or time. It seems to suggest that though we are limited by our physical bodies and the distance we can travel, we can still find ways to connect with the people we love. The final verse of the song is the most optimistic, speaking of how absence can be a source of beauty and inspiration. With the world outside teeming with hope and possibility, Hevia urges us to fill our homes with the colours of tomorrow and let our balconies sing with the promise of new beginnings.

"Absence"

There are absences that are like oblivion
that dust early mornings and seeds
that were lost to those seas
where you can never find the shore

There are absences that rub against the dawn
jealous butterflies from space
austere prisoners of flowers
They put your honey on your lips

Absence
Remote phantom absence that you violate the doors that you sing that you scream to the sky that voice that you have taken with you
what do you write the missing song
that you always remind us of the distance

There are seagull absences that save you
that disdain borders and stations
that roam the walls, the words
drawing the faith with your crayons

There are absences that tell you about tomorrow
that turn all colors
that they put the world in the window
and of hope you fill the balconies..
