Heropsychodreamer
Live Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'll kill you in my dreams
I turn the other cheek during the day
I'll kill you all
The subculture of my dreams

Is waiting for me to fall asleep
I know you're scared you should be
I know you're scared
Hero

Dreamer
This attic of my mind
These feelings I can't hide
I can't share

I feel alone ah yeah
The subconscious keeps me here
I fell in love with a balladeer
I saw your tongue it licked my heart

They called you queer
Hero
Dreamer
Hero

They called you queer
They called you queer

They called you queer
They called you queer

Overall Meaning

The song "Heropsychodreamer" by Live presents a complex narrative of a person’s internal thoughts and desires. The lyrics begin with a disturbing declaration of violence - the singer confesses to a desire to kill someone in their dreams. However, during the day the singer takes a more passive approach and turns the other cheek. The subculture of their dreams is where they feel most alive and hold the power to control their desires. The singer seems to understand the uneasiness their thoughts may cause in other people, as the lyrics address the fear of the listener's during the night.

The chorus introduces us to the “hero dreamer” who symbolizes the singer’s ideal version of themself that they aspire to become. This elusive concept is living deep inside their subconscious. The singer is fully aware of their unrequited love for someone who only exists in their imagination or a performer/artist they admire. They feel the weight of the inability to share their emotions, which culminates in a feeling of loneliness. The singer projects these internal struggles onto a balladeer, who represents the epitome of emotional vulnerability in music, as their tongue licked their heart. Unfortunately, society doesn't take kindly to this level of raw emotion, and labels the balladeer as "queer" which reflects the oppressive nature of society.
