Mother's Little Helper
Liz Phair Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What a drag it is getting old

"Kids are different today", I hear every mother say
Mother needs something today to calm her down
And though she's not really ill, there's a little yellow pill
She goes running for the shelter of a mother's little helper
And it helps her on her way, gets her through her busy day
"Things are different today", I hear every mother say
Cooking fresh food for a husband's just a drag
So she buys an instant cake and she burns her frozen steak
And goes running for the shelter of a mother's little helper
And to help her on her way, get her through her busy day

Doctor, please, some more of these
Outside the door, she took four more
What a drag it is getting old

"Men just aren't the same today", I hear every mother say
They just don't appreciate that you get tired
They're so hard to satisfy, you can tranquilize your mind
So go running for the shelter of a mother's little helper
And four help you through the night, help to minimize your plight

Doctor, please, some more of these
Outside the door, she took four more
What a drag it is getting old

"Life's just much too hard today", I hear every mother say
The pursuit of happiness just seems a bore
And if you take more of those, you will get an overdose

No more running for the shelter of a mother's little helper
They just helped you on your way, through your busy dying day, hey

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Liz Phair's song, "Mother's Little Helper" are a commentary on the pressures of motherhood and aging. The opening line, "What a drag it is getting old," speaks to the general feeling of frustration and exhaustion that can come with age. The next few lines highlight the idea that children have changed and that mothers need something to calm them down. The "little yellow pill" referenced is likely a reference to Valium, which was commonly prescribed to women in the 1960s and 1970s to alleviate anxiety.

The second verse delves deeper into the pressures of being a mother and a wife. Cooking fresh food is a "drag," and instead, mothers opt for instant cakes and frozen steaks. The line "And to help her on her way, get her through her busy day" speaks to the need for the mother to keep going even when she feels overwhelmed.

The third verse discusses the differences between men and women and the fact that men don't appreciate the tireless work that women do. The line "And four help you through the night, help to minimize your plight" references the idea of using sleeping pills to find peace and quiet.

Overall, the song is a critique of the pressures placed on women to perform as wives, mothers, and homemakers, and the toll that it takes on their mental and physical health.

One of the best covers I've ever heard of any song.  She replaces Jagger's contempt with a detached irony that can't quite be called compassion. Like everything else Liz Phair does, this is a winner.

Was the Rolling Stones the original composers? Or who where they?

malbuff

Yes, it's a Mick/Keith credited tune.

I agree.

Liz does a great version here!

Though I personally love the contemptuous tone in Mick's voice it really lends well to the mood of the 60's scorning kids doing drugs while ignoring if not endorsing middle class mothers popping pills such as Valium, or similar drug, legally with a doctors prescription.

malbuff

@Ky Olsen Yep. Times sure have changed. :-)

I think it hits different when a mom (Phair) is singing it. I also like her vocal delivery here; very clear, moreso than Jagger's version.

Love it.
