Phair's 1993 debut studio album, Exile in Guyville, was released to acclaim; it has been ranked by Rolling Stone as one of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Phair followed this with her second album, Whip-Smart (1994), which earned her a Grammy Award nomination for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance, and Whitechocolatespaceegg (1998). Ten years after the release of her debut, Phair's fourth album, Liz Phair (2003), released on Capitol Records, moved towards pop rock, earning her a mainstream audience but alienating critics.
After the release of her fifth album, Somebody's Miracle (2005), Phair left Capitol and released her sixth album Funstyle independently in 2010. In 2018, it was announced that Matador Records would be releasing a retrospective set for Phair's debut album Exile in Guyville which includes remastered recordings from her original Girly-Sound demo tapes. Phair released her seventh studio album, Soberish, in 2021.
Take A Look
Liz Phair Lyrics

Wanna know all the details of my disaster
Like an accident on the side of the road
When you're driving past slow but there's nothing to see here
[Chorus:]
Wanna take a look, take a look [Repeat: x4]
You'll never see me the same
What's all the fuss about?
Are you sure you wanna find out?
Cause once you know the truth
You might wish you'd walked away
[Chorus]
What if I'm not able
To put my cards on the table?
And would it liberate you
If you knew what I knew?
It's been over a year now and
I never saw him again
The facts and the fiction
Collide as the bodies untangle
And the traffic moves on like it did
[Chorus: x2]
In the song "Take A Look" by Liz Phair, the singer is feeling weary of the attention and scrutiny she has been receiving due to an experience in her life that had resulted in her being labeled as a 'freak'. She questions the motivation of those trying to learn more about her and her situation, comparing it to slowing down to gawk at an accident on the side of the road. The chorus repeats the line "Wanna take a look," emphasizing her frustration and distaste for the curiosity surrounding her.
The second verse addresses the fear and vulnerability she feels about sharing the full truth of her experience. She ponders if the knowledge that she holds will be freeing or burdensome to those who seek it out. The final verse reveals that it has been over a year since the incident, implying that she has moved on and put it behind her. However, the line "the facts and the fiction collide as the bodies untangle" suggests that there is still confusion and uncertainty surrounding the events that took place.
Overall, "Take A Look" is a commentary on the way society tends to fixate on and analyze the issues and struggles of others, often with a voyeuristic and insensitive perspective.
