Stop
Lizz Wright Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Don´t tell me to stop
Tell the rain not to drop
Tell the wind not to blow
'Cause he said so

Tell me love isn´t true
It´s just something we do
Tell me everything I´m not
Don´t tell me to stop

Tell the sun not to shine
Not to get up this time
Let it fall by the way
Leave me where I lay

Tell the leaves not to turn
Don´t tell me I´ll learn
Take the black off a crow
But don´t tell me go

Tell the bed not to lay
Like the mouth of a grave
Not to stare up at me
Like a calf on its knees

Tell me love isn´t true
It´s just something we do
Tell me everything I´m not
But don´t tell me to stop

Tell me everything I´m not
Don´t tell me to stop

Overall Meaning

The lyrics in Lizz Wright's song "Stop" convey a deep feeling of resignation to one's fate in a relationship. The opening lines "don't tell me to stop, tell the rain not to drop, tell the wind not to blow, 'cause he said so" show that the singer is helpless in the face of her lover's wishes; she must go along with what he wants even if it means enduring pain. The repeated refrain "tell me love isn't true, it's just something we do" further emphasizes the fatalistic attitude of the singer towards love. She believes that love is not a feeling but rather a set of actions that one must take in order to preserve the relationship even if it feels wrong.

The remaining stanzas are filled with images of nature that seem to reflect the singer's inner turmoil. She wishes for the sun not to shine and for the leaves not to turn, while at the same time wanting the black off a crow. These contradictions suggest that the singer is battling with herself and her desires for her lover, unable to reconcile her love for him with the negative consequences it brings. The final lines "tell me everything I'm not, but don't tell me to stop" emphasize a sense of resignation and acceptance, as the singer seems to have given up trying to change her lover or her situation.

Her voice is something unreal. Wish to go one time to hear her live. Maybe If she will be in Europe at least somewhere in Germany or France... I don't even dream her to come to Ukraine, but would be miracle if come true...

any distance to travel for her is worth while ... she's a revelation --- first time I saw her live she brought tears in my eyes within a few seconds once she started singing... her presence is (as you say) somehow unreal

Stop: my intro to Lizz on Canadian radio a few years ago. I raced to the music shop (a really large one) where they had to order this CD, and I waited. It took a while. I hope Lizz has better presence there now... Amazing voice. She connects with all her listeners. Someone wrote this about her, that it was as if Lizz was singing to her during a performance in a small venue. I know what she means, just from listening here!

Joe Henry is married to Madonna's sister -- that's the connection. Haven't heard Madonna sing it but I love Lizz's version. She has a lovely voice and interprets songs in an original way.
