Wake Up Little Sparrow
Lizz Wright Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Wake up, wake up
Little sparrow
Don't make your home
Out in the snow
Don't make your home
Out in the snow

Little bird,
Don't you know
Your friends flew south
Many months ago
Your friends flew south
Many months ago

You're just a babe
You cannot fly
Your wings won't spread
Up against the sky
Your wings won't spread
Up against the sky

Wake up, wake up
Little sparrow
Don't make your home
Out in the snow

Don't make your home
Out in the snow

Overall Meaning

The lyrics in Lizz Wright's song "Wake Up Little Sparrow" are a warning to a young bird advising it not to make its home in the snow. The song is written from the perspective of someone who recognizes the vulnerability of the bird and is urging it to find a safer place to survive. The gentle melody and the repeated lyrics add to the sense of urgency in getting the bird to move from its precarious location.

The lyrics suggest that the bird has been left behind by its friends who flew south many months ago, and that it is too young to fly. The line "Your wings won't spread up against the sky" further emphasizes the helplessness of the bird. The repetition of the chorus serves as a reminder to the bird to wake up and find a safer place to survive, away from the danger of the cold and snow.

Overall, the song is a beautiful metaphor for the need to take care of the vulnerable in our society, including children, the elderly or anyone who may be facing difficult circumstances, as they need our help to thrive and survive.

Heard this at a ballet. Spent HOURS trying to find the singer. And immediately bought her CD when I did. Amazing voice.

Just found this singer and am so happy I did. She's in a strange niche of her own, so that probably accounts for her limited viewership. Folky jazz or jazzy folk, pop song structures, but not pop, not gospel or modern R&B but coming from the same tradition of Spirituals. Just amazing.

Believe it or not, I've just had a musical epiphany listening to Lizz's songs. A major one.
