In 2007, 5 Points Records talent scout Van Wilson found Lizzy performing at a songwriting conference in Brooklyn and introduced her to David Nichtern. The two of them agreed that she had potential to have a major breakthrough and signed her to a multi-record contract. With 5 Points Records backing, Lizzy recorded a 7 track demo EP known as No Kung Fu that was sent to various producers before reaching David Kahne. After hearing the tape, the producer agreed to produce an album with Lizzy. On working on the album with David Kahne, Lizzy had said: "We were pretty obsessive about it". When discussing the genre and sound of the record, Lizzy wanted the record be cinematic and reflect her affection for nostalgic imagery, she later said "he kind of got my whole vibe straight away." The final masters for the album took place on February 25, 2008, between 6 and 7 PM. All the songs were mastered at that time with the exception of "Gramma (Blue Ribbon Sparkler Trailer Heaven)" on February 26, 2008 and "Raise Me Up (Mississippi South)" on February 28, 2008.
In October 2008, Lizzy's EP titled Kill Kill was commercially released by 5 Points Records. When talking about the EP, she stated: "I was never expecting to release an EP, but when iTunes came and became fervent supporters and said, “Put out anything and we'll give you the artist's spotlight,” we decided, okay, we'll just put out an EP."
Lizzy stated in a 2011 interview that when her and David Kahne had finished the record in 2008, it was shelved for two and a half years by her label at the time (5 Points Records). This caused the official release of the album to be on January 4, 2010, although it had been finished for much time before then, and the original release date was initially planned for February 14, 2009. Despite being known and promoted as Lizzy Grant prior to the album's release, she became insistent she wanted to go under the stage name Lana Del Ray, leading the album to be released as such. "A.K.A. Lizzy Grant" was added on the album cover to connect her with her previous name.
The release of the album was digital, available from iTunes and Amazon in the United States for around $9.99 or $0.99 for each track. Due to lack of funding for the album, however, it was eventually pulled from online stores after three months. According to David Kahne, Lizzy bought the rights back from her label as she wanted it out of circulation. David Nichtern stated "Her and her new manager came in and said 'We want to get this off the market. We’re going for a completely new deal. We’ll buy you out of the deal.' So we made a separation agreement."

I like the Ivy and the
Ink blue
Yayo, yeah you
Yayo
You have to take me right now
From this dark trailer park
Life now
Yayo
Put me onto your black motorcycle
Fifty baby doll dress for my 'I do"
It only take two hours to Nevada
I wear your sparkle
You call me your mama
Let me put on a show for you daddy
Let me put on a show
Let me put on a show for you tiger
Ahhh-ah-ah
Let me put on a show
I need you like
A baby when i hold you
Like a druggy
Like I told you
Yayo, yeah you
Yayo
Put me onto your black motorcycle
Fifty baby doll dress for my 'I do"
It only take two hours to Nevada
I wear your sparkle
You call me your mama
Let me put on a show for you daddy
Let me put on a show
Let me put on a show for you tiger
Ahhh-ah-ah
Let me put on a show
Hello Heaven
You are a tunnel lined with yellow lights
On a dark nite
(Dark night)
Yayo
Yeah you
Yayo
Put me onto your black motorcycle
Fifty baby doll dress for my 'I do"
It only take two hours to Nevada
I wear your sparkle
You call me your mama
Let me put on a show for you daddy
Let me put on a show
Let me put on a show for you tiger
Let me put on a show
The lyrics of Lizzy Grant's song "Yayo" are haunting and intense, conveying a sense of longing and desperate desire. The first verse sets the scene, with the singer admiring the tattoo of a snake on her lover's body, as well as the blue ink and ivy surrounding it. She addresses her lover directly, using the word "yayo" repeatedly, which is a slang term for cocaine. The chorus repeats this sentiment, with the singer expressing her need for her lover to take her away from her current life and situation.
The second verse is more explicit in its imagery, with the singer asking her lover to take her for a ride on his black motorcycle, dressed in a baby doll dress. She sings about the ease of getting to Nevada, indicating that she wants to escape and start a new life with her lover. She calls him "daddy" and herself "mama," suggesting a power dynamic in the relationship. The bridge of the song is a striking departure, with the singer describing heaven as a tunnel lined with yellow lights on a dark night.
