No Blue Skies
Lloyd Cole Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You want to leave me baby be my guest
All I'm gonna do is cry
And then I'm gonna find there's someone else
And tear the stars out of the sky
Looking for something when there's nothing there to be found
Make it easy on yourself
Go out and find your body someone else
And tear the stars out of the sky
Baby you're too well-read
Baby you're too well-spoken
Baby you're too pristine
When I cry, do you feel anything?
Baby you're too well-read
You want to leave me baby be my guest
All I'm gonna do is cry
And then I'm gonna find there's someone else
And tear the stars out of the sky
Baby you're too well-read
Baby you're too well-spoken
Baby you're far too clean
When I cry, do you feel anything?
Baby you're too well-read
Baby you're too well-read
You don't need me anymore
You don't need me anymore
They say storms are right for summertime
Well baby I'm long gone
Whatcha gonna do when you open your eyes
It's a brand new day and baby
No blue skies
Baby you're too well-read
Baby you're too well-spoken
Baby you're too pristine
When I cry, do you feel anything?
Baby you're too well-read
Baby you're too well-spoken
Baby you're far too clean

When I cry, do you feel anything?
Baby you're too well-read

Overall Meaning

The opening line "You want to leave me baby be my guest, all I'm gonna do is cry" immediately sets the tone for this song. Lloyd Cole is acknowledging that the person he's addressing wants to leave him, but he's also saying that he's not going to stop them. The line "And then I'm gonna find there's someone else and tear the stars out of the sky" suggests that he'll move on and take revenge by finding someone better.

Throughout the song, Cole uses the repetition of "Baby you're too well-read" to convey a sense of frustration and inadequacy. He seems to be saying that his partner is too intellectual, too polished, too perfect, too "clean" for him, which makes him feel insecure and inferior. He questions if they even feel anything when he cries, implying that he's not getting emotional support from them.

The closing lines "Whatcha gonna do when you open your eyes, it's a brand new day and baby no blue skies" suggest that this relationship has run its course, and there's no hope for reconciliation. The phrase "no blue skies" implies a sense of hopelessness and despair, as if the end of this relationship has left him feeling empty and lost.
