Their earlier work is noted for genre-crossing style, distorted and at times alien lyrics, distinctive funk bass lines and extensive use of lo-fi recording practices; although it would be a stretch to call the style of the music as a whole 'lo-fi' in the more traditional sense. This work is best exemplified by their debut album "How To Operate With A Blown Mind" on Skint Records. After its release, on the eve of a UK tour, the band's singer [known as The Wrekked Train] left with Sheriff John Stone. Phil took over as the singer but since then other members of the band (Johnny, Andy and Martin) have all sung, along with guests Greg Dulli, Jamie Lidell and Bootsy Collins.
Their later work has less vocal distortion but the lyrics and sound remain distinctive. The 2002 album "Don't Be Afraid of Love" covers a range of styles but all are drenched in funk and includes the aforementioned guest vocalists.
The group have recently finished working on their third studio album "Northern Stomp", featuring the tracks "Northern Stomp", "Smash and Grab World" and "Southside Lowdown" (featuring Greg Dulli). The album is set for release around Easter 2009 on Corsair Records.
They are also recording and playing live under the name Technically Men. Tracks are available on www.lofidelityallstars.co.uk www.technicallymen.com and the bands' MySpace pages (www.myspace.com/lofiallstars www.myspace.com/technicallymen). Phil also has a weekly radio show on www.wirelessfm.net on Tuesdays from 10pm - midnight, UK time.

Lo Fidelity Allstars Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Swooping and surfing over lyrical substations
Embrace the flame again and again
Like passion and pain hand in hand with each other.
Sliding, deeper I'm gliding
Shooting.
I am deeper than you.
Bombs wired to my chest I'll lace the building with bugs
'cause you'll always be behind me slip-streaming my buzz
See me rocket off into the ozone layer
Spiraling off into the ether
Slip-streaming our buzz
Slip-streaming our buzz
Slip-streaming our buzz
Slip-streaming our buzz
Into the ether
Sliding, deeper I'm gliding
Shooting
I am deeper than you
Into the ether
The opening lines of Lo Fidelity Allstars' "Kasparov's Revenge" suggest a bird's-eye view of a bustling metropolis, as if the singer is a winged creature effortlessly scraping the skylines (tall buildings) and swooping over lyrical substations (locations that may hold creative or emotional energy). The reference to "hypnotic observations" suggests a level of trance or altered consciousness, as if the singer is lost in the sensory overload of the cityscape. The next lines introduce a theme of duality or contrast, as passion and pain are compared to each other, "hand in hand." This suggests that the singer may be experiencing a blend of pleasure and pain, perhaps as a result of the city's intensity, or in a metaphorical sense, as a result of personal struggles.
The next section of the song veers into a more aggressive and confrontational tone, with the singer claiming to have "bombs wired to [their] chest" and threatening to "lace the building with bugs." It is unclear what the motivation behind this violent imagery may be, but the use of the second-person perspective implies that the singer is addressing someone specific, likely an adversary or antagonist. The line "you'll always be behind me slip-streaming my buzz" suggests that this person may be following or copying the singer's actions in some way, potentially as a means of gaining personal fulfillment or recognition. The final lines of the song repeat the phrase "slip-streaming our buzz" over and over, as if to emphasize this mimicking or parasitic behavior. The final line, "into the ether," implies a sense of departure or escape into a realm beyond the physical, which could be read as a positive or negative outcome depending on the interpretation of the rest of the lyrics.
