Their earlier work is noted for genre-crossing style, distorted and at times alien lyrics, distinctive funk bass lines and extensive use of lo-fi recording practices; although it would be a stretch to call the style of the music as a whole 'lo-fi' in the more traditional sense. This work is best exemplified by their debut album "How To Operate With A Blown Mind" on Skint Records. After its release, on the eve of a UK tour, the band's singer [known as The Wrekked Train] left with Sheriff John Stone. Phil took over as the singer but since then other members of the band (Johnny, Andy and Martin) have all sung, along with guests Greg Dulli, Jamie Lidell and Bootsy Collins.
Their later work has less vocal distortion but the lyrics and sound remain distinctive. The 2002 album "Don't Be Afraid of Love" covers a range of styles but all are drenched in funk and includes the aforementioned guest vocalists.
The group have recently finished working on their third studio album "Northern Stomp", featuring the tracks "Northern Stomp", "Smash and Grab World" and "Southside Lowdown" (featuring Greg Dulli). The album is set for release around Easter 2009 on Corsair Records.
They are also recording and playing live under the name Technically Men. Tracks are available on www.lofidelityallstars.co.uk www.technicallymen.com and the bands' MySpace pages (www.myspace.com/lofiallstars www.myspace.com/technicallymen). Phil also has a weekly radio show on www.wirelessfm.net on Tuesdays from 10pm - midnight, UK time.
Somebody Needs You
Lo Fidelity Allstars Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I think I met you at a party and left with an impression
Like foxy I want you
I wonder what her mouth tastes like
I wonder what she look like in the morning
What you look in in the morning child
Somebody wants ya
Together we can take it home
Your lips girl, they kill me
Confuse me and fulfill me
Your bodies like a road
Come slip that knot around my throat
Baby watch me swoon
Baby and do my thing
Come on clap your hands little mama
And do what your daddy said
Saw you shake your ass on the corner now get it on back to bed.
Saw you shake your ass on the corner now get it on back to bed.
Saw you shake your ass on the corner now get it on back to bed.
Somebody wants ya
Somebody needs ya
Together we can take it home
Come on shake your ass on the corner
Now get it on back to bed
Ill take you home
The "Precious somebody" in the song refers to a woman who caught the attention of the singer at a party. The singer is contemplating what it would be like to be with her physically, wondering what her mouth tastes like and how she looks in the morning. The lyrics convey a sense of lust and admiration for this woman, as the singer cannot seem to get her off his mind. Despite the sexual undertones present, the lyrics also suggest a desire for connection as the singer repeats the lines "Somebody wants ya / Somebody needs ya / Together we can take it home." The chorus implies that the singer believes they could have a deeper relationship beyond just physical desire if they were to pursue a connection. In the final verse, the singer is drawing the woman's attention to himself, urging her to "clap your hands" before telling her to "get it on back to bed." The instruction to return to bed suggests that the singer is trying to initiate something more intimate with her.
Overall, the lyrics to Lo Fidelity Allstars' "Somebody Needs You" convey a sense of primal desire mixed with a desire for deeper connection. The singer is enamored with the object of his attention, wondering what it would be like to be with her, but also suggesting a desire for a deeper relationship. The chorus implies that the singer believes they have something special that, if pursued, could bloom into something more profound.
