I’m glad you mentioned Boston. The Red/Blue missed connection is the most glaring but there are others. In general, the connections between the Commuter Rail and the subway could be better.

The Green Line Extension that just opened runs adjacent to the Lowell Line of the commuter rail. But you can only transfer between them at North Station in Downtown. This means anybody from the suburbs trying to get to Somerville would need to go all the way to downtown before heading back out. The Green Line should have been extended to West Medford or an infill station should be built on the Lowell Line. 11:11

Similarly, the northern terminus of the Blue Line (Wonderland) is just a couple hundred feet from the Newburyport/Rockport Line. But the commuter rail doesn’t stop there, so you can’t connect.

The connection between the Ashton-Mattapan trolley line and the Mattapan commuter rail station leaves a lot to be desired.

Riverside, the western terminus of the Green D line, is very close but not connected to the Auburbdale commuter rail station.

Missing links in London:

- The Circle/District line terminus at Edgware Road stops just shy of both Marylebone and Baker Street. Quite annoying but I did at least discover a really nice coffee shop and bakery with a “local village” feel walking between the two, which is quite unusual for London.

- The London Overground passes right over Brixton, very close to the station but unfortunately its position on some old viaducts and limited space makes adding a station there very impractical. To get to Brixton from this line requires two further changes.

- The Victoria line terminus at a Brixton is one short stop away on the train to Thameslink at Herne Hill.

- When the Elizabeth Line opened, it meant a regional train service from Greenford to Paddington had to be cut back to West Ealing. This stops just one stop short of Ealing Broadway which would have made this truncated line way more useful. One day I imagine this track could become part of the Central Line, closing the loop.

- No (direct) interchange between the Elizabeth Line and the Victoria Line. Which would have been great as these two lines alone have the power to break the “40 minutes to get anywhere within London regardless of distance” rule.

- Surprisingly no stop on the Elizabeth Line at London City Airport.

- The Northern Line extension doesn’t go to Clapham Junction. I suspect this was deliberate as I’m not sure the line could handle the extra passenger numbers.

Ah yes, Berlin and the surrounding area is a real offender to this problem... A lot of these are really short missing connections and you can get around them by changing lines a little more often, but they still make everything much less convenient . Here are just some examples that I personally really hate:

U3 from Krumme Lanke to Mexikoplatz (S1) - 850m
U1/U3 from Warschauer Straße to Frankfurter Tor (U5) - 1.2km
U5 from Berlin Hauptbahnhof to Turmstraße (U9) - 2.1km
U2 from Ruhleben to Rathaus Spandau (U7, S3, S9) - 3.4km
U1 from Uhlandstraße to Adenauerplatz (U7) - 1.3km
U9 from Osloer Straße to Wollankstraße (S1, S2, S25, S26) - 1.9km
U7 from Rudow to Berlin Brandenburg Airport (S9, S45) - 5km
U4 from Innsbrucker Platz to Friedenau (S1) - 1km
M2 from Heinersdorf to Pankow Heinersdorf (S2, S8) - 1.1km
and my personal hate:
RB27 from Schmachtenhagen to Oranienburg. The Gap is 6.7km long, but the rails ALREADY EXIST. they just have to reactivate them, then the currently really unused Line would have a FAR bigger purpose.

Anyway, the video mentioned "various points on the Berlin U-Bahn Network" aaaaand as you can see, he isnt wrong.

As you have mention in the video the missing link created by the REM is between the Dorval exchange Vaudreuil-Dorion EXO line and the Pierre-Elliot Trudeau Airport in Dorval and the CN Via Rail Line.

In Montréal the two big missing link was Édouard-Montpetit Interchange with the blue Line-5 and McGill interchange with the Green Line 1 but the REM fixed this.

Another Missing link like the Pie-IX extension on the blue Line 5 for the BRT on Pie-IX that supposed to be fixed with the Blue Line extension to Anjou.

However we missed a rare huge opportunity here. to create 4 new line with a simple interchange at PIE-IX/ Les boulevard (blue Line) which should not been confuse with Pie-IX / Stade Olympique on the Green Line.

First we got the Crosstown Anjou - Snowdon -> Lachine Blue Line 5
Secondly you got the Montréal-North Downtown Pink Line 6
Then a Crosstown Montréal-North -Snowdon -> Purple Line 7
Then a Dowtown Montréal - Anjou Magenta or Line 8

Using the sames tunnels twice.

So , What do you think ?

P.S.:The STM did not like the former Crooked Mayor/King of Laval Gilles Vaillancourt's [1989-2013] (Laval / Downtown) Big Orange Open Loop plan.

The STM Wish they have end the Metro at Cartier in Laval back in 1966 creating a beach head and let the Société de Transport de Laval (STL) to extend and connect their own Network like they did for Longueuil with the Yellow line 4

Also they would rather had split the Orange 2 line that they find too long at Bonaventure/Gare Centrale for Operations and Safety reasons.

The Western Branch would become the New Red Line 3. The Old Red line 3 was a Iron Wheel Metro supposed to be the old Deux-Montagnes up to Val-Royal i.e Boulevard Toupin om Cartierville (3A) / Ahutnsic (3B) Mascouche Line via the Mount-Royal Tunnel of the Canadian Northern Railway (CNR -> CN -> AMT -> RTM -> EXO -> REM).

P.P.S Speaking of the Yellow Line 4 is just to connect between The South Shore Longueuil and Berri-UQAM. Some people want it to be extended both ways but it's not a priority for Montréal

Blue Line 5 is a crosstown between the two orange branch that support Université-de-Montréal Campus.

The Old Pink Line 6 was another Iron Wheel crosstown between Du College and Sauvé along the CN right of Wau north of the Metropolitain Highway 40. Now it's is partially part of the Pink Exo5 Commuter Line.

The Old White Line 7 was a parallel Line of the Line 2 Orange along the Pie-IX boulevard . to replace the Montréal North line extension of the blue line who was flattened to Anjou in the 1980'sé it was replace by a SRB/ BRT line 505 in the 1980's- who will be replace by another SRB/ BRT Pie-IX

Thee is no convention for Line 8,9 and 10 however line 11 also know as the P.A.T. LRT Extension between the Honoré-Beaugrand Terminal on the Green Line 1 and the neighborhood of Pointe-Aux-Trembles via the Souligny corridor now who was part of the REM de l'est project.

Currently the bus lines starts at 10 with 10 Delorimier and 11 Montagne 12 Ile-des-Soeurs 13 Christophe-Colomb 14 Atateken (formerly Amhearst), 15 St-Catherine, 16 Graham, 17 Décarie, 18 Beaubien, 19 Chabanel, etc.

Paris has many, MANY, missing links. The most frustrating has to be the northern end of M12, with sidings extending all the way to the RER B at La Courneuve but the last stop being nearly 1km south. Other face-palm-inducing missing links include (clockwise from M12 north):
- M7 north at Le Bourget (currently RER B, M16/17 being built)
- M3 east ending in the middle of a highway interchange
- M1 east (ongoing political battle)
- M5 south which stops INSIDE Paris, it's insane (IMHO it should take over one of the two M7 branches)
- T6 east should have been extended to T3 or M4
- M12 south to T2 or RER C or Transilien N
- M8 south but it's not obvious where to
- M9 and M10 should cross the Seine and connect to T2 (M15 will cross the river though)
- M2 west could be extended to Puteaux or Surennes (maybe a bit overkill)
- M3 west to Bécon-les-Bruyères (Transilien L, M16 being built)
- M3bis and M7bis, just for kicks

I want to talk about an example the video doesn't mention.

First, some background info: In Ankara, the Ankaray (LRT) Line ends at the city's intercity bus terminal. This line is the first rail line in the city. Then, 20 years after this line had opened, the government built a new metro line and put a station that is located close to Ankaray line. But because of this new line built under a highway, there are apr. 800 meters distance between those two stations.

Later, the government dug a tunnel between those stations, put the rails, even built the transfer station, etc. but the line couldn't be opened. Why? Because Ankaray's signalization was too old to be modified, extended, etc. Signalization of the whole line needed to be rebuilt from scratch. Now, the municipality is running an expansion program about the other end of the Ankaray, and they announced while they are building the extension, they'll modernize the signalization and open the other part, too. It probably will take years, but it's better than nothing.

Edit: Again in Ankara, the M4 line ended at a ridiculous station. Yes, it had a transfer station with M1 but you had to make a transfer to go downtown. The funny part is the distance between the station where M4 ended and the downtown station was only three stations. Thankfully, they realized the nonsense and currently expanding M4 to downtown.

Edit 2: I just realized our M1 line has missing connections, too. If they have built 1,5 km longer, the M1 line would end at the location that our commuter rail Başkentray's expanding station.

Paris actually has several more missing links, including:

-M3 between Pont de Levallois Bécon and Bécon Les Bruyères
-T5 to Basilique de Saint-Denis
-M7 to Le Bourget
-M7 from Mairie d’Ivry to Ivry-sur-Seine (RER C)
-M9 from Pont de Sèvres to Musée de Sèvres on T2
-M10 from Boulogne Pont de Saint-Cloud to Saint-Cloud (connecting to T2 and to Transilien L & U)
-M11 from Mairie de Lilas to Rosny (which is currently being built)
-M9 from Mairie de Vincennes to Montreuil-Hôpital (to connect to the M11 extension)
-M1 from Château de Vincennes to Fontenay (which is planned)
-Future T10 from Clamart-Place du Garde to Gare de Clamart (which might be planned?)
-T1 extensions to the east and west which are under construction or are planned

De-fault! De-fault!

"The next best time is now" sounds so obvious but it's actually excellent insight in the world of transit planning, where "well we didn't do it when we should have so now we just won't do it" seems to be the prevailing approach to things.

Kevin Love

@Bert Graef So what. That is a not-so-whopping $3.20. I will give greater consideration to the tens of millions of dollars in crony corruption from John Tory tripling the amount paid to "outside consultants."

Bert Graef

@Kevin Love corruption? The amount of deadbeats and entitled people who just walk on the bus without paying, and them some of them even publicly declare the driver is an ahole for questioning their non paying , staggers me.

Bert Graef

@RMTransit if people cant walk a few blocks between stops, then too bad. And I am a transit user . The amount of deadbeats, utter slobs, weirdos , druggies and and entitled "poor" people forever yapping obnoxiously on their cell phones , but how dare they have to waddle over a few blocks to the next stop.

Matt McIrvin

@Kevin Love In the US most people see transit as a welfare program for the poor, and those who are not poor believe they do not benefit from it (or will actually be harmed). So funding it through taxes is a big ask. In most other countries it's treated as a public good that anyone might use.

The video does not mention an important class of missing link: The deliberate missing link. This is usually the case where two different governments or levels of government are constructing transit and feuding with each other. The example in Toronto that drives me crazy is the lack of connection between the Leslie subway station and the Oriole GO station. In a rational world, the GO station would be moved 250 metres up THE EXISTING TRACK and co-located with the subway station in order to make for an easy transfer. But we do not live in a rational world.

KeiTruckUrbanist

Good news theres a propsal to do exactly that

That's why I quite like the fact that public transport is mostly a state government issue (as opposed to a local government issue). That diminishes the possibility of different agencies working against each other.

Though that's partially because (with the exception of Brisbane), the other local governments are usually tiny, with less than 100k population in urban areas with over 2 million.

Kevin Love

@Bert Graef No, I do not really expect you to feel sorry for my arthritis. Because that would involve having a heart.

Bert Graef

if you cant walk a few blocks to the next station, I am supposed to feel sorry for you?
