He is signed to Hospital Records and has been releasing music since 2004, which he creates using the Reason and Ableton sequencers. His music style tends towards the more soul-influenced styles of drum & bass but also targeted at a club audience rather than a home audience, and is described as such by Hospital Records as "bridging the gap between a lacklustre sub-genre, liquid funk, and more exciting, dancefloor orientated drum and bass". His older brother, Dan Gresham, known as Nu:Tone, is also a drum and bass producer signed to Hospital Records, with whom Matt collaborated under the name Nu:Logic before starting his career as a solo artist. They both still collaborate sometimes, both on producing and DJing.

I've had courses in Algebra, Calculus and Trigonometry, but never really had these concepts connected to actual real-world phenomena, so it always felt very... mechanical, very transactional. If they incorporated these concepts into the teaching, I believe it would make it much more relatable during the process.

You really did a good job with this one. This is something that’s been fascinating to me for a long time, and there was even a point a few years ago when I was trying to explain to my mathematical friends, the connections between the logistic map and the Mandelbrot set and they didn’t believe me! This stuff seems so fundamental, but it doesn’t seem like it’s tot as a unifying principle when it could be. Loved James Gleick’s books and Chaos is a great read. My favorite Math course in college was on fractals and chaos, learning about the Lorentz attractor, the Mandelbrot and Julia sets, and this equation about the period doubling bifurcation to chaos. Learning about fractal dimensions. Thanks so much for making your videos and keeping my love of mathematics going. Makes me want to look into chaos with all the other parabolic equations and check out feigenbaum’s constant.

Truly great stuff, and definitely digging the recent trend of chaos which shows that even disorder is somehow strangely ordered adhering to prescribed properties mathematicians and physicists have been working out.

I've been studying emergent behavior since the 80's, when I first read Conway's Game of Life.
Back then, it was treated as a nuisance, irrelevant, and annoying.

I love watching the break into oscillation as your R-value changes .That's the same behavior as a damped spring, or feedback in an audio system.
The transition to chaos between states makes a lot of sense.

I love the visualization of the Mandelbrot set, that gave me the perfect starting point to understand it in another dimension. Wonderful.

I’ve been studying mathematics all my life in school. Now in college, I’m doing a triple majors degree and one of the majors is math.
Despite this, I’ve never felt an attachment or even a remote fascination for the subject. That is until I saw this video. This has sparked my interest and admiration for the subject.

So, basically, 'Chaos' is a misnomer now. There is clear method and math to the madness. Are we really living in a simulation :-)? Sometimes, it fascinates me to see all the advancements made in math, science. probability. stats etc with a simple thesis to put some structure/framework to quantify the world around us. It has helped us explain a few phenomenons, create products, even predict stock prices, human behavior (looking at patterns and trends etc) but the other part of me is conflicted - for life and its energies cant be modeled. It's too fascinating to be modeled out and the vastness of the universe and my spiritual beliefs are a complete anti-thesis to my scientific side. Heck, even science is ever changing - now, we are discovering qubits - particles that carry both -ve and +ve charges, which has deep implication to our view of physics and the world around us!

While amazing, how much can humans really 'figure out' vs realizing there is something more to life that what even our more prolific attempts at math/AI/ML will ever get us to.. Or, perhaps, there isnt a higher power :-)?

I read James Gleik's book my sophomore year in college ( after hearing about it on Robert Sapolky's MIT OCW lectures on behavioral biology). at least 50% of the book went right over my head, but it still revolutionized the way i saw all of rality. it triggered a paradigm shift from simple reductionism to a paradigm more focused on things like stochasticity and probabilities and the possibility of true randomness. This book is the number one reason why I went from struggling with chemistry with Gen chem 1 and 2, to making the highest grade out of 175 students to take organic chemistry. It all came down to learning how to create more effective visual models in my mind of how electrons flow like a liquid. Chaos theory truely does open up the window for a New Kind Of Science. I am not a mathematician. I'm a biologist and biophysics student, and I can say, you don't need to fully understand the equations, you just need to understand the principles of chaos theory in order to experience that paradigm shift. Or at least that was my experience.

My lifelong interest in natural history often concluded in finding complex patterns in nature, but patterns for sure. Mandelson diagrams have always intrigued my interest and the universality you mention almost always presents at some point. Man since I've discovered this channel is like finally I'm relating to maths in any way. The fact that I'm understanding the implications of a equation (something I was taught to do mechanically at school without any purpose and hated later) feels like a big feat for me. As the humanist that I am (languages are my thing and did very bad at maths since I turned 14), now I sort of believe whatever truth there is about the universe, it will only be explained by maths. I've always made my own theories about it borrowing what I learned from philosophy, literature, history, mysticism, all based on natural languages and a different sort of abstract thinking, if you know what I mean... A little bit later I got interested in physics but still. But now this is BAHM. I'm always somehow deterministic when it comes to explaining human behaviour, nature, etc., and always believed there must be some underlying patterns, something really really basic yet complex that is within the core of everything that we know. I feel I'm closer to understanding, even if I must be incredibly far from it.
But there's so much about maths I still don't know. I wish I had had better math teachers back in high school.

That's probably the ideal situation. If a tutor were to customize a lesson for you specifically, they'd probably aim for a difficulty level you'd find interesting, and a lecture that you could mostly follow. You'd also be very slightly outside your comfort zone, to give you room to "grow into" the lesson. It would also be a bit challenging and would leave you with a few questions to mull over, thereby slightly increasing the chance of watching another video, or of reading a book or article on a similar topic. Your comment would probably be music to the ears of a lot of educators.

The peculiar thing about this phenomenon is the fact that it is actually correlated with several motives in science. It is associated with chaos theory, statistics( possibly), thermal convections, complex mathematics and design. It is also associated with anything that has periodic symbolism.

on the note of how a number cicles in the mandelbrot set, there's a guy who took those cicles and turned them into the frequency of oscilations of a wave to then turn that into sound, he made a program and all that allows you to explore different fractals and hear and see how the values bounce arround (including chaotic regions)

This concept is actually taught in engineering. Particularly in Control Engineering. It's taught because it gives a lot of intuition in nonlinear differential equations. These differential equations occur quite often in nature and in engineering problems when you have to model the dynamics of a system!

I did the kitchen sink dripping chaos thing as a child a lot. Since you mentioned it, I remember it was an ASMR thing when I was very young and alone. The sound of the water dripping in the kitchen sink I'd get on a stool get really close and stare at the drip and listen to the drips on the stainless steel and just do that over and over opening and closing the tap slowly. I forgot all about that until you mentioned it. I was always so fascinated by that. And also this exact subject.

I went to the "Chaos Conference" at Sydney in (I think?) 87, met some pretty incredible physicists and mathematicians, and even got a couple of Autographs :) but mostly felt just awed that this was an interesting thing, and that I knew somehow it also was kind of important. B Mandelbrots lecture was lovely, but some of the different maths topics (from geometry obviously, but Prime number theory, Analytic and Discrete maths and biological mathematics. For me it was a memorable experience. So I get you, and I wish you more power to your arm, because yeah there's something compellingly beautiful and yet still mysterious. Good on you for your work, long may you continue and thanks!

You rotating the Mandelbrot set to display the bifurcation raises an interesting idea. Most people really don't consider a sine wave on an oscilloscope is a 2d graphical representation of something with a cross section, that happens in 360 degrees, through (at minimum) 3 dimensions, and where the line appears on the screen is actually the center of a probabilistic cloud... it was always guys who look into what was going on in the screen, instead of being dazzled by the signal sent across it, who have made the most profound discoveries.

As a control systems engineer, I've seen this behaviour before in several systems when control goes awry.

There is always an initial value X for every r over 1 that keeps X stable because next X will be the same as previous one. That initial value is where f(x)=x intersects the reverse parabolic curve represented by the function g(x)=rx*(1-x). So stability can be found for any r over 1 with the proper initial value.

An equilibrium point exists for sure, but you don't actually know without further calculation if it's stable or not.

@Релёкс84 The exact initial X value for the equilibrum is the higher root of the following quadratic equation: 0 = -rx^2+(r-1)x. Zero is always the smaller root and equilibrum, which means if there is no rabbit then there will be no rabbit. :-) The other X that satisfies the equation is the initial value we are looking for. In closed form it is:
Xeq = (r-1)/r
If r>2 then this is a stable equilibrum as we are on the falling side of the upside-down parabolic curve, which means that a smaller value results a larger next population and a higher value results a smaller one. In my opinion it is important to be close enough to the above explained initial value at the beginning and the population will remain stable.
