Lokua Kanza was born Pascal Lokua Kanza in 1958 in Bukavu, in the province of Kivu, in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo. He is the eldest of eight children, with a Mongo father and a Tutsi mother from Rwanda. In 1964, the family went to live in Kinshasa (Congo's capital) in a middle class area, until the day when Pascal's father, a ship's captain, died. His mother then moved to a much poorer area of the city, and Lokua, the eldest, had to work to feed the family. He therefore went to school part time, and took odd jobs, as well as singing in churches. Lokua Kanza sings in French, Lingala, and English.

The lyrics of Lokua Kanza's song Anata O are simple but profound, reflecting the universal sentiment of love and devotion towards a loved one. The lyrics express that whether it is a good time or a bad time, the singer always thinks about their beloved. The line "omotellu" indicates the intense emotion the singer feels for their loved one, while the comparison to the wind suggests that this love is unobstructed and uncontainable. The song's title, "Anata O," translates to "You" in English, emphasizing the central focus of the song on the singer's love for their beloved.
The song's melody adds to the mood of the lyrics, with Lokua Kanza's soulful and soothing vocals blending perfectly with the traditional Japanese elements incorporated in the music. The fusion of African and Japanese music elements makes the song unique and memorable while also adding cultural diversity to the track. The combination of the two distinct cultures also lends itself to the universal feeling of love, which is found across all cultures and is a theme that many can relate to. Overall, the lyrics and music work together to produce a beautiful and heartfelt tribute to love and devotion.
