Lokua Kanza was born Pascal Lokua Kanza in 1958 in Bukavu, in the province of Kivu, in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo. He is the eldest of eight children, with a Mongo father and a Tutsi mother from Rwanda. In 1964, the family went to live in Kinshasa (Congo's capital) in a middle class area, until the day when Pascal's father, a ship's captain, died. His mother then moved to a much poorer area of the city, and Lokua, the eldest, had to work to feed the family. He therefore went to school part time, and took odd jobs, as well as singing in churches. Lokua Kanza sings in French, Lingala, and English.
More Than Just Sex

bad choices are to blame
you've had a lot of sweet talk
with not action
you've fallen for physical
attraction
nakonganga na mokili yo
oyo ekomeli ngai lelo
bolingo ya liboma
More than just sex
More than one night of passion
I'm talking bout as good as it gets
a love that's everlasting
I'll earn your faith I'll earn your trust
We'll have it all
just the two of us
give you all the love you crave (yes I will)
be your hero in your heart
nakonganga na mokili yo
po bayeba nini ango
oyo ekomeli ngai lelo
bolingo ya liboma
More than just sex
More than just one night of passion
I'm talking bout as good as it gets
A love that's everlasting
The song "More Than Just Sex" by Lokua Kanza is a heartfelt ballad that speaks to the necessity of trust, faith, and love in a relationship. The song starts off by pointing out the fear and pain that might come from past bad choices and sweet talk with no action. It highlights the fact that people often fall for physical attraction - a dangerous mindset that can lead to shallow relationships. The chorus asserts that the love the singer has to offer is "More than just sex" and "More than one night of passion". It is the kind of love that is everlasting and worth having.
Throughout the song, the singer promises to earn the listener's trust and faith. He assures the listener they will "have it all just the two of us" and be able to give them "all the love you crave". He asserts his desire to be a hero to the listener, by holding their trust and being there for them.
The repetition of the Congolese phrase “nakonganga na mokili yo, po bayeba nini ango, oyo ekomeli ngai lelo, bolingo ya liboma” adds an exotic feel to the song. It translates as “I’ve been turning around the Earth, without knowing what I was looking for. But today you showed me love.”
