Lokua Kanza was born Pascal Lokua Kanza in 1958 in Bukavu, in the province of Kivu, in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo. He is the eldest of eight children, with a Mongo father and a Tutsi mother from Rwanda. In 1964, the family went to live in Kinshasa (Congo's capital) in a middle class area, until the day when Pascal's father, a ship's captain, died. His mother then moved to a much poorer area of the city, and Lokua, the eldest, had to work to feed the family. He therefore went to school part time, and took odd jobs, as well as singing in churches. Lokua Kanza sings in French, Lingala, and English.

my babe
You'll Never Know how much I care
yo ozali moyi na ngai
foloio na ngai ya talo
kotika ngai te soki otiki ngai
na kowa
You'll Never Know how much I miss you
my babe
You'll Never Know how much I love you
voix parlèe:
I love you
you are so far from me
I miss you and I love you
yo ozali moyi na ngai
Foloio na ngai ya talo
kotika ngai te soki otiki ngai
na kowa
You'll Never Know how much I miss you
You'll Never Know how much I love you
You can't imagine how much I care for you
oh yes I do I love you yo wa ngai
In Lokua Kanza's song "You'll Never Know," the singer is expressing deep sadness and longing for a person they love intensely. The repetition of the phrases, "You'll Never Know how much I miss you, my babe" and "You'll Never Know how much I love you," emphasizes the singer's inability to express their true feelings to their loved one. The verses in Lingala, a language commonly spoken in Central Africa, add to the emotional weight of the song.
The line "yo ozali moyi na ngai" translates to "you are my heart" in English, and "foloio na ngai ya talo" means "my happiness." The next line, "kotika ngai te soki otiki ngai na kowa" can be translated to "don't leave me alone, even if you have to come and take me." These lines speak to the singer's intense desire to be with their loved one, to the point where they don't want to be alone, even if it means leaving everything behind.
The spoken words in the middle of the song also reveal the singer's longing and love for the person they are singing about. They say, "I love you, you are so far from me, I miss you and I love you." The song is a beautiful expression of the pain and joy of deep love, and how sometimes it's difficult to communicate those feelings to the person we love.
