In her native town of Rosario, Sinaloa, Beltrán completed her secretarial studies while she participated in many singing competitions. She then moved to Mexico City where she was discovered while working at the radio station XEW, and never went back to Rosario again.
She married Alfredo Leal, a matador and film actor, and with him had two children: María Elena Leal, who is also a singer, and José Leal. She entered the world of film in 1954 starring in El tesoro de la muerte. After participating in dozens of films, most of them musicals, she obtained a role in the telenovela Mi rival with Saby Kamalich. In 1976 and 1984 she hosted the musical shows Noches tapatías and El estudio de Lola Beltrán respectively.
Beltrán is still considered with Lucha Reyes the most successful ranchera-music singer of all time. She was the first ranchera singer to perform at the Palacio de Bellas Artes. She also performed at the Olympia music hall in Paris, the Tchaikovsky Hall of Moscow and the Conservatory of Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg) in the former Soviet Union.
Soon after recording Disco del Siglo with Lucha Villa and Amalia Mendoza "La Tariácuri" (produced by Juan Gabriel) she died of a massive pulmonary embolism at the Ángeles hospital of Mexico City.
La noche de mi mal
Lola Beltrán Lyrics

No quiero ni saber a dónde vas
Así me lo dijiste aquella noche
Aquella negra noche de mi mal
Si yo te hubiera dicho no te vayas
Que triste me esperaba el porvenir
Si yo te hubiera dicho no, no me dejes
Por eso fue que me viste tan tranquilo
Caminar serenamente bajo un cielo más que azul
Después ya ves, me aguante hasta donde pude
Termine llorando a mares donde no me vieras tú
Si yo te hubiera dicho no te vayas
Qué triste me esperaba el porvenir
Si yo te hubiera dicho no me dejes
Mi propio corazón se iba a reír
Por eso fue que me viste tan tranquilo
Caminar serenamente bajo un cielo más que azul
Después ya ves, me aguante hasta donde pude
Termine llorando a mares donde no me vieras tú
Si yo te hubiera dicho no te vayas
Qué triste me esperaba el porvenir
Si yo te hubiera dicho no me dejes
Mi propio corazón se iba a reír
The lyrics of Lola Beltran's song "Mal De Amores" tells the story of a person who has been heartbroken by a lover who left them. The singer expresses their desire to no longer hear the lover's name or know where they are going. They recall the night the lover left and the sadness it caused them.
The singer acknowledges that if they had begged the lover to stay, they would have been left with a bleak future. They would have been left with a sense of betrayal and a broken heart. Thus, they put on a facade of calmness, walking peacefully under the blue sky, hiding their pain until they couldn't take it anymore, and burst out crying in a place where the lover could not see them.
The song beautifully portrays the emotions of a broken heart and the pain of losing someone. It posits that sometimes, holding on to someone who wants to leave can be worse than letting them go. It is a powerful message for anyone who has experienced heartbreak or lost love.
