Hessians? Fairs' fair, I'm no great fan of Germans but ~ aside from destroying most of the western Roman Empire and bothering us during a couple of world wars, Germans in general have enjoyed a good reputation.
The 'British' Hessians were regular troops paid as British soldiers not 'mercenaries' as the term is generally understood today.
The majority of Americans only know of Hessians because of the popular TV show Sleepy Hollow based on Washington Irving’s famous book.
This is not a fitting legacy for these well trained soldiers who were as honourable as any other of that period, fought, died, and were a part of the American experience.

Hessians were no more 'mercenaries' than Gurkas or Irishmen who served, or for example the very many Americans who chose to sail under the British flag including many in the Royal Navy, some of whom were present on famous ships as varied and HMS Victory (104 guns) at Trafalgar (see the crew list at the Kew Archive, London) and the second in command of the famous H M Schooner Pickle (10 guns) the carrier of Admiral Collingwood's 'Trafalgar Dispatch' was an American.

Many Hessians sympathised with the rebels, as did many British soldiers.
Many remained in America after the war, the unlucky ones as dead, others by choice to try to build better lives and a new country in the 'New World'.
All services have some bad officers, one here helps make this poorly researched but entertaining movie.
If it's criminals you want, try looking at how the U S government, many of its agents and citizens preyed upon each other and robbed, stole and murdered the pre European population.

I have never seen a historical movie made with so many factual errors. To list them all would be long and boring,
So here is a partial list.
I guess this Von Webber is totally invented. I never heard of him and can't find any reference's.
Hessian's were mercenaries the King hired during the Revolution. Many changed sides and joined the American army. Tee Pee's were new and only found in the plains. Maybe not invented yet.
The British were intent on the Fur Trade. They wanted to preserve & expand it, and ally with the tribes to be their trappers, since they brought in most of the furs. No one wanted them dead, especially.the British- except Maybe Sir Amherst.the British CinC.
Later on poor American farmers along the frontier came to hate all Indians with passion,.
Pontiac's Coalition waged a brutal war trying to exterminate "the English", had his coalition attack "the English" by surprise in May 1763, along the entire frontier., destroying forts, hamlets and a entire village, plus a great many small farmers, in addition to the British Forts.

Pontiac's Coalitions strategy was meant to minimize Indian casualties.. To lure the men & older boys away, and then attack undefended farms and hamlets in the valley., destroying structures and killing everybody (usually in horrible ways).. It worked very well the first year.
The unexpected result was all the male survivors, with their wives and entire families wiped out, dedicated the rest of their lives to exacting revenge.
The British CinC in North America, Sir Amherst, distrusted all Indians, and made forbidden the sell of muskets and gun powder to them.. In addition British traders now held the monopoly on all trade so had raised prices, and they would not give "gifts" as the French did. The ban on firearm sales and powder, reduced the tribes ability to hunt for food and furs. This really made the Indians mad, and they foolishly planned for war.(and to exterminate the "English"). The English traders were bound to raise a commotion in London- reducing the tribes ability to hunt hurt their fur business.. Amherst would have been overridden.
Pontiac's Coalition waged a brutal war trying to exterminate "the English", his coalition attacked "the English" by surprise in May 1763, along the entire frontier., destroying forts, hamlets and a entire village, plus a great many small farmers, in addition to the British Forts.

Excellent movie. Just plain enjoyable to watch.

The Native Americans in this classic belong to the Sioux and are wearing the garb of their tribes rather than the appropriate garb worn by the tribes of the Michigan/Ohio/Indiana areas.
Filmed before Hollyweird learned to use actual naive Americans for native American roles as leads.
(Jay Silverheels went a long way toward helping correct this.)
Thank you for posting this rare and mostly historically correct film.

Sioux is the anglicised version of the ojibwa tribe word for enemy, is roughly means" little snakes 🐍 "

I'm sorry but I can find almost nothing correct in this movie except some the names, of some of the main characters.. Von Webber and his Hessian's never existed, No one was going around attacking native Americans.
Pontiac's coalition made their surprise attacks because the prices were too high on trade goods, and Amherst prohibited selling gun powder or muskets.
Smallpox- No one had discovered germs yet. No one knew about sterilization. No one really knew how Small Pox was passed.
It's a guess, that blankets from the hospital would pass on Smallpox. Around 1790 the first vaccine was made, still without knowing the reason why it worked;,

these were the studio extras from Custer's Last Stand.

though some clichés, not being indian and not really historically accurate, I very much enjoyed Lon Chaney's portrayal  of Pontiac-it was sensitive and wise--miles away from 'house of Frankenstein--he was an underated actor-

Richard Young

The great Lon Chaney Jr the Greatest Wolf-man that scared the heck out of me and Lex Barker played some many great roles even Tarzan! So it was great being a kid back then w double features John Wayne big Detroit Cars! The happiest times of my life!

David Podlesny

mine too

Raymond Pilarczyk

That pesky Von Weber somehow found his way to Colorado, ticked off the Arapaho, which then got the Arapaho allies the Cheyenne upset, prompting them to take the place of the Ottawas, which must have really cost the production company to acquire all them horses and tepees to keep this historically correct... this explains everything and I can watch this now
