Don't Cry For Me Argentina
London Cast Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It won't be easy
You'll think it strange
When I try to explain how I feel
That I still need your love
After all that I've done
You won't believe me
All you will see is a girl you once knew
Although she's dressed up to the nines
At sixes and sevens with you
I had to let it happen
I had to change
Couldn't stay all my life down at heel
Looking out of the window
Staying out of the sun
So I chose freedom
Running around trying everything new
But nothing impressed me at all
I never expected it to
Don't cry for me Argentina
The truth is I never left you
All through my wild days
My mad existence
I kept my promise
Don't keep your distance
And as for fortune and as for fame
I never invited them in
Though it seemed to the world they were all I desired
They are illusions
They're not the solutions they promised to be
The answer was here all the time
I love you and hope you love me
Don't cry for me Argentina
Don't cry for me Argentina
The truth is I never left you

All through my wild days
My mad existence
I kept my promise
Don't keep your distance
Have I said too much?
There's nothing more I can think of
To say to you
But all you have to do is look at me to know
That every word is true

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to the song "Don't Cry for Me Argentina" from the London Cast are a poignant expression of a complex emotional journey. The song is sung from the perspective of Eva Perón, the iconic First Lady of Argentina, as she reflects on her life and the choices she has made. It begins with her acknowledging that it will be difficult for others to understand why she still needs love, even after everything she has done. She anticipates that people may see her as someone they once knew, but she has transformed herself, indicated by the line "Although she's dressed up to the nines, at sixes and sevens with you."

Eva Perón then explains that she had to let certain things happen and change in her life. She couldn't continue living a life of obscurity ("couldn't stay all my life down at heel"), always looking out the window and staying out of the sun. She chose freedom and embarked on a journey of trying new experiences, but despite her search for meaning, nothing truly impressed her.

The chorus of the song, "Don't cry for me Argentina," is a plea to her fellow Argentinians to not mourn or pity her. She tells them that the truth is she never really left them, even during her wild and tumultuous days. She kept her promise to them and wants them to remember that she is still present and connected to them. She dismisses the allure of fortune and fame, revealing that they were never what she truly desired. While the world may have perceived those external achievements as her ultimate goals, she declares that they are illusions and not the solutions they promised to be. The answer, she realizes, has been her love for her people all along. The song concludes with a question of vulnerability, asking if she has revealed too much, but assuring that every word she has spoken is true.

For my money, Elaine Paige's version simply wipes the floor
with the overblown, over the top version done by the
American Soprano Patti Lupone. This version is so imbued
with a sensitivity, sincerity of the reading of every word
that-IMHO-is lacking in the American production of this
amazing musical. Paige's version makes me cry, touches
my Soul every time I hear it, and that is what I'm certain that
Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice were aiming for when
they wrote this brilliant song.

I played this video without fully reading it, thinking it was the Original Broadway Recording with Patti. I was very surprised to hear that it wasn’t Patti. I’ve never heard Elaine sing this song, but damn! I’m so glad I clicked on this. Simply amazing!

I quite agree, to be honest I’ve never really seen the allure of Patti LuPone. I’m sure she’s had better moments, but every time I hear her sing or see her perform she’s always blasting off at the speed of flight not caring a single bit about treating the music with the respect it deserves. Her phrasing is always jarring, her rhythm isn’t even always that interesting (more distracting), and her actual voice is grating to me. I’ll take Elaine Paige and interestingly enough Madonna, over Patti (I’m not even that fond of Madonna).
